Fire Blocking/Protection Narrative:
This narrative is to serve as the working document and plan to bring the existing 2 family property
located at 74-76 Hawley Street up to fire protection code. Each unit has a total of 7 rooms, with 4 of
these as existing bedrooms,in addition there is one full bath and 1 %z bath for each unit. Since each
unit is identical the description below is a plan for each side.
Working top down:
3'd floor-2 bedrooms. The old plaster an lath has been removed. Each bedroom will have hard
wired smoke detectors and the top of the stairs will have a combo smoke& CO2 detector. 5/8
drywall will be applied to the separation wall(s)from floor to ceiling. Baseboards will need to be
removed and reapplied. Gable ends of the home will require fire blocking as the structure is balloon
framed, this will be accomplished with fire rated mineral wool. Stairwell to 3'floor will also need
5/8 drywall on each side and fire blocking between the studs separating the stringers as this is also
balloon framed.
2"d floor-has two bedrooms-each will be hardwired with smoke detectors. The top of the stairwell
will also have a combo smoke/CO2 detector. Unit 74 has existing"newer"drywall installed,taped
but never painted, looks to be V2. Unit 76 had been completed renovated by previous owner with
new drywaH,its completely taped and painted. The front bedroom closet of unit 74 will need an
additional 5/8 drywall install as this closet extends beyond the typical divider wall. (See plan)
1"Floor-Kitchen,Living room, dining room. Each unit will require a hard wired smoke at the top
of the stairs leading to the basement. Same situation as 2nd floor; unit 74 has existing dry wall on
the walls from the previous owner taped but not painted. Unit 76 was completed-new drywall, taped
and painted.
Basement-Smoke/Co2 combo at the base of the basement stairs. Divider wall to separate units will
require 5/8 drywall from floor to ceiling and between the floor joists. Since the joists are irregular a
mixture of old and new along w/the heating ducts, piping&wiring interfering with a tight ceiling
connection J propose 5/8 drywall blocking between the floor joists and mineral wool stuffed into&
around any gaps and subject to inspection. There will be one access door between the units in the
basement that will be minimum 1 hour fire.
