Subject:LaPerle/Powers, 12 Hockanum Rd.
In response to the letter that was sent to Joe LaPerle and Mary Powers, I
inspected the two rear stairwells/fire escapes at 12 Hockanum Rd. in
Northampton.
Both stairwells were wood framed at some point in the past. The
framing materials were sized correctly, however I found the fasteners
throughout were either wrong or nonexistent. All existing members had
the proper, nails, lags, bolts braces and hangers installed everywhere
that we possibly could.
On the upper deck of the northeast unit, we had to replace the joists and
decking due to extreme rot. There were issues regarding fastening to the
foundation members (sono tubes) on both units, and, if the tubes were
sufficient of not. This was hard to determine due to the amount of snow
that is still on the ground.
These issues will be addressed as soon as the weather and conditions
allow. Either myself or the owners will be in contact with you as soon
as possible.
