PLUMBING IDENTIFICATION
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. The other Contract Documents complement this Section.
B. Division 01 – General Requirements and Section 220000 govern all Work of
Division 22.
C. Other specification sections (Divisions 02-14, 21, and 23-26) may contain
requirements related to Division 22.
1.02 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes the following plumbing identification materials and their
installation requirements:
1. Equipment nameplates.
2. Equipment markers.
3. Pipe markers.
1.03 SUBMITTALS
A. Refer to procedures for submittals in Section 013323, “Shop Drawings, Product Data,
and Samples.”
1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. ASME Compliance: Comply with ASME A13.1, “Scheme for the Identification of
Piping Systems,” for letter size, length of color field, colors, and viewing angles of
identification devices for piping.
1.05 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING
A. Coordinate installation of identifying devices with completion of covering and
painting of surfaces where devices are to be applied.
B. Coordinate installation of identifying devices with location of access panels and
doors.

C. Install identifying devices before installing acoustical ceilings and similar
concealment.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 MANUFACTURERS
A. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by one of the following:
1. Allen-Bailey Tag & Label, Inc.
2. Brady (W.H.) Co.; Signmark Division.
3. Industrial Safety Supply Co., Inc.
4. Seton Name Plate Corp.
2.02 EQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION
A. Equipment Nameplates: Rigid aluminum or stainless steel, with data engraved or
stamped, for permanent attachment on equipment.
1. Data:
a. Manufacturer, product name, model number, and serial number.
b. Capacity, operating and power characteristics, and essential data.
c. Labels of tested compliances.
2. Location: Accessible and visible.
3. Fasteners: Permanent fastening system, as required to mount on equipment.
B. Equipment Markers: Indoor/outdoor vinyl tape, suitable for surfaces -40 deg F to
175 deg F, yellow background with preprinted black lettering.
1. Equipment Mark: Match equipment schedules.
2. Letter Size for Major Equipment:
a. Minimum 1-1/2 inch for name (equipment mark) of units for viewing
distances up to 72 inches, and proportionately larger lettering for greater
viewing distances. Include secondary lettering one third to one half the
size of unit name lettering.
3. Letter Size for Small Equipment Located Above Ceilings, such as calibrated
balancing valves:
a. Minimum 1/2 inch for name (equipment mark) of units. Include
secondary lettering one half to two thirds the size of unit name lettering.

4. Data: Distinguish among multiple units, indicate name and service of each
unit, operational requirements, indicate safety and emergency precautions, and
warn of hazards and improper operations.
2.03 PIPE MARKERS
A. Self-Adhesive Pipe Markers: Indoor/Outdoor plastic with pressure-sensitive,
permanent-type, self-adhesive back, suitable for surfaces -40 deg F to 175 deg F.
Preprinted, color-coded, with lettering indicating service, showing direction of flow,
and meeting ANSI/OSHA standards.
1. Colors: Comply with ASME A13.1. Where colors are not specified by ASME
A13.1 for a given piping system, provide “green” color pipe marker with “white”
lettering.
2. Lettering: Use piping system terms indicated in the “Plumbing Drainage Pipe
Material Schedule” and “Plumbing Utility Pipe Material Schedule” on the
drawings. Abbreviate only as necessary for each application length.
3. Lettering Size:

Over 10” 3-1/2”
4. Arrows: Integral with piping system service lettering to accommodate both
directions; or as separate unit on each pipe marker to indicate direction of flow.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 EQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION
A. Install and permanently fasten equipment nameplates on equipment that does not
have nameplate or has nameplate that is damaged, located where not easily visible,
or does not meet the nameplate requirements of this Section.
B. Install equipment markers with permanent adhesive on or near plumbing equipment.
As follows:
1. Locate equipment markers where accessible and visible. Include markers for
the following general categories of equipment:
a. Pumps and similar motor-driven units.
b. Backflow preventers, balancing valves, mixing valves, control valves, and
similar equipment.

c. Water storage, thermal expansion, and similar tanks.
d. Water heaters, filters, softeners, and similar equipment.
e. Heat exchangers and similar equipment.
f. Air compressors, air filters, air dryers, air receivers, and other similar
compressed air equipment.
g. Gas and water pressure regulators.
h. Flow meters.
3.02 PIPING IDENTIFICATION
A. Install pipe markers on each piping system.
1. Locate pipe markers where piping is exposed in interior or exterior locations
and above removable ceilings and as follows:
a. Near each valve and control device.
b. Near each branch connection, excluding short takeoffs for fixtures. Where
flow pattern is not obvious, mark each pipe at branch.
c. Near penetrations through walls, floors, ceilings, and nonaccessible
enclosures.
d. At access doors, manholes, and similar access points that permit view of
concealed piping.
e. Near major equipment items and other points of origination and
termination.
f. Spaced at maximum intervals of 50 feet along each run. Reduce intervals
to 25 feet in areas of congested piping and equipment.
3.03 ADJUSTING
A. Relocate plumbing identification materials and devices that have become visually
blocked by other work.
3.04 CLEANING
A. Clean faces of plumbing identification devices.
