Mr. Hasbrouck,
We have finished our review and we will have hazardous material quantities above the thresholds that cause the
building to be an H use group. Specifically, the quantity of corrosive chemicals (sodium hydroxide and phosphoric acid)
will exceed 500 gallons.
Attached is a mechanical plan of the proposed building showing the layout of the equipment and the location of
chemicals. The chemicals stored and the size/type of containers are as follows:
• 50% sodium hydroxide (caustic) for pH Neutralization – 275 Gallon Tote and 2,000 gallon double‐walled Bulk Storage
Tank
• 75% phosphoric acid for pH Neutralization and as a phosphorous source/nutrient for biological treatment – 275 Gallon
Tote
• 30% UAN (Urea Ammonium Nitrate) – contains nitrogen, a nutrient required for biological treatment – 275 Gallon Tote
• Defoamer – a chemical used to prevent foaming in the MBBR tank – 55 gallon drum
• Coagulant – a chemical that improves the solids removal efficiency in the Dissolved Air Flotation System – 275 Gallon
Tote
• Polymer ‐ a chemical that improves the solids removal efficiency in the DAF and is used for conditioning sludge during
dewatering in the Centrifuge – 55 gallon drum
I have also attached the sprinkler design and fire alarm design drawings for reference. Please let me know if you have
any questions or comments.
Thank you,
‐Brent

Brent,
In terms of sprinklers, all H use groups need sprinklers, no matter the size of the building (Mass Amendments
chapter 9, table 903.2). The question is whether your process is an H use as defined in IBC chapter 3 or whether the
hazardous material quantities are below the thresholds and the use group ends up as F‐1 which might not need
sprinklers.

Thank you for your response. We will perform a code review for the project per your request and submit to the City for
review.

Brent,
I have spoken to the Building Commissioner, Lou Hasbrouck in regards to the sprinkler system for the proposed building
at Coke. In the state building code any H use group would need to be sprinklered. I would ask that a code review of the
project be done and submitted for review. With that we can have a better understanding of the project and be able to
make an informed decision for sprinklers. Any questions please let me know.

Duane,
I have a project with Coca Cola at their 45 Industrial Drive facility in Northampton where a new detached 2,200 SF
building will be constructed and I would like to talk to you about whether a sprinkler system is required. I am going to be
in Northampton today meeting with Jerry Goodsell at the Coca Cola facility and was wondering if I could stop by to
discuss, possibly sometime late morning or early afternoon. I will give you a call later this morning.
Thank you,
‐Brent
