Jeff,
The following is a summary report of my review of your drawings for this fire escape, dated March 2, 2010 and
revised March 24.
The primary design criterion is the 100 psf live load for the platforms. Dead loads consist of the sizes shown on
your drawings. Material properties are also as shown.
The platform is at the second floor level, and ties into an existing platform on the adjacent building, which also
has stairs down to grade. The primary support beam for the platform will be placed 28" lower than the 2 floor. nd
One end of the beam will frame into the existing steel beam over the alley; this existing beam will be reinforced
as part of this work. No additional loads will be put on the old, soft brickwork of the 7 Pleasant Street building,
The other end of the beam will attach to a new steel channel header over the existing masonry opening in the
adjacent building.
In my opinion this fire escape as designed will be able to safely support these loads, and under normal
circumstances it will not have an adverse impact on the existing structures on which it bears.
I hope that you find this satisfactory. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Respectfully Submitted,
Ryan S. Hellwig
