Dear Larry,
The Utica Boiler Model USC-3 that is proposed for the townhouse apartments at-34'MiciielmaaAvenue
is a Category IV appliance and is listed for use with a single wail special gas ventirig system. Venting
systems that have been tested and certified by the American Gas Association(A.G.A_)are included in the
manufacturer's installation instructions. The A.G.A. hsung is specific to the venting system tested and
other products by the same manufacturer cannot be substituted.
The Massachusetts Fuel Gas Code(248 CMR 6.00-7.4.3"Special Gas Vent")requires that Category IV
appliances shall be vented as listed and installed as required by the manufacturer.
Installation instructions from Utica and the manufacturer of the venting system detail vertical installation
of the single wall vent system in a rated chase.The venting system must be installed as shown on these
details in order to comply with the listing agency's certification.
We have spoken at length with Mr.Joe Peluso,State Plumbing Inspector,and he has stipulated that the
single wall special gas vent system is a requirement of the manufacturer and is in compliance with t1:e
Massachusetts Fuel Gas Code. A double wall gas vent is not certified fox use with this boiler and is not
acceptable to the manufacturer.
our office will inspect the venting systems upon completion to verify that the installation is in strict
conformance with these requirements.
