RE- Millbank Affordable Housing
Dear Mr. McCarthy:
This letter is to answer the three concerns that have recently been brought to our attention
concerning the above referenced project. Also enclosed with this letter is a revised Site
Layout Plan(Sheet L-2)showing the location of the recommended wood guard rail.along
with Construction Details—3A(Wood Guard Rail Detail).
1. The rip rap stability during transfer of water between the 2 lobes of
the detention basins through the narrow channel is adequate. The 1"to 4 "
rip zap stone is sufficient. The water enters the basins from 2 different
locations and the connecting channel between the 2 lobes isn't taking a full
100 year storm through it. The connecting channel is only to equalize flow.
2. A guard rail in the area directly to the west of 79 Michelman Ave along
the outside radius of the road is recommended idea since there is a 3 foot
drop and there is a vault there at the bend. The guard rail shall extend
around the outside radius for approximately 60 linear feet. A Wooden Guard
rail would be sufficient here. Mass highway guard rail(galvanized)is not
recommended since the aesthetics are an issue and a wooden guard rail is
sufficient for traffic safety in this location
3. Ponding at the vault shouldn't be a problem since the grading there is
shedding water toward the back. Just make sure the contractor grades it
back as shown. A spot grade of 117.5 can be held at approximately the
northwest corner of 79 Michelman Ave and graded back around the building
toward the transformer to the existing 117 contour. The contractor only

needs to "crack a bubble" so that water will be shed off from the area. The
area can be sloped from the 117.5 spot grade toward the transformer and the
backside of 79 M.ichelman.

Re: Millbank Affordable Housing
Dear Kevin:
we are concerned with the discharge area of the south end catch basing.
During a heavy rain the water will discharge into a narrow grass
covered trench instead of a larger pond. This could cause erosion and
and the .bank to collapse.
I realize that there is Rip Rep to be installed at the outlet, but I
am still concerned that there might be problems on a heavy rain.
Could you check on this and let us know if our concerns are justified.
Thank you,
Robert A. Desrosiers
