The applicant's building is not only set back a substantial distance from the street line, approximately 85 feet, but in addition the abutting buildings are close to their street lot lines as well as to their side boundary lines closest to the applicant's premises. As a result, any signage allowed as of right (on the building) is effectively not visible to or noticed by vehicular traffic. In addition, the sign proposed is to make known to the public the presence of an automatic teller machine, available for use by the general and travelling public, many of whom would not otherwise know that a credit union office was in that location, and would not otherwise know to look for an automatic teller machine (ATM) in that location. Having an ATM is a commercial necessity in the 1990 's. But we are a small credit union, and public use of the machine is necessary to cover its fixed costs.
