Dear Bob:
Per your request, Architects Inc. has reviewed the
periscope loading on the existing concrete floor and
submits the following observations:
1. Physical inspection, by others, has determined the
concrete slab on grade to be a minimum of 4" thick.
Concrete used for this type of construction
typically has a compressive strength of at least
2 ,000 pounds per square inch. This is obviously
well above the periscopes dead weight of 268 pounds
per square foot. (See attached sketch) .
2 . The concrete slab is bearing directly on a
compacted gravel base which typically averages 6"
thick. The soil bearing capacity of this base
material is no less than 2,000 pounds per square
foot, the allowable bearing pressure for fine sand
and inorganic silt which would be typical for this
area of Northampton.
3 . Personal inspection determined no obvious flaws in
the floor, thus the assumption is made that the
slab is in fact bearing directly on the gravel base
and no excessive settlement or hollow spots occur.
For these reasons, we see no adverse effects in placing
the periscope on this concrete floor.
