Structural nick.dufresne @pvep.com analysis by Chris Vreeland (See P.E. letter). PV array install limited to the lower 35 feet of girder on the south roof(east warehouse). Array: Total of 84 SPR-327s silver frame commercial. Some in landscape and some in Roofing Material: Standing seam metal. • The roof purlins were analyzed to determine their available collateral load capacity and they were found to have only modest amounts of remaining load. This was not enough to allow for installation of solar PV panels over the entire south facing roof surface. However, there was enough capacity to allow for a small number of panels to be installed if they were centered over the girders thereby creating only a small additional increase in bending stress to the purlins. The girders and columns were analyzed and found to have adequate capacity to support the additional loading.Layout drawings were prepared to show the location of the solar modules, rails and mounting feet relative to the purlins and girders. These seven drawings, entitled:Project:Pioneer Valley Books, dated 9/18/20I3, have been reviewed and demonstrate the proper array locations that will allow for a complaint loading scenario. Based on my observations and analysis,it is my opinion that the structure can support the loads from the proposed solar PV system and meet the requirements of the eight edition of the Massachusetts Building Code. The layout of the PV modules, rails and mounting feet must be performed as shown on the drawings as noted to distribute the loads evenly and at the points that will result in stresses on the supporting structural members that are within design values. The repair to the column should be performed prior to construction of the solar PV system. r. The building appears to have been constructed over three different periods. The two older portions of the building were found to be at or above the current design loads;therefore the detailed analysis only focused on the'new'portion of the building which is the easternmost portion (currently used as a warehouse). Activities Performed and Site Observations - The roofs girders and purlins were measured for further analysis to determine the loads and stresses on the structural members. - The roof is comprised of metal decking on steel purlins(z-strips)which are supported by tapered plate girders. There are two interior columns supporting each girder. - There are several hvac units on the roof;these have additional steel support(i.e.they do not bear onto the purlins). - The foundation was inspected and there are no observed of significant foundation settling or cracks along load bearing points. - The structure had sway bracing on the roof and wall to counteract lateral movement. - There is minor damage to one of the interior columns. This is the eastern most column on the south side.It appears to have been hit by a fork truck and has permanent deformation/deflection of approx 1/2".This column should be repaired by sistering a five foot section of C5 X 9 channel steel to cover each of the two concave sides of the damaged area;this should be done with no live(snow)loading on the roof.It was recommended to the building owner that this repair be performed regardless of the solar PV installation.
