The Fire Alarm system will be designed and installed by others. The sprinkler(s) will continue to flow water until the water control valve is manually closed. Dry Pipe Sprinkler System: Heat produced from a fire melts the fusible link or glass bulb on a single sprinkler head, or group of sprinkler heads, causing the sprinkler(s)to open. The air is then exhausted from the dry system piping allowing water to enter the system piping through the Dry Pipe Valve and is then discharged from the open sprinkler head(s) to extinguish the fire. The Fire Department may supplement the system by positioning a Fire Department pumper truck between a fire hydrant and the fire department connection. The sprinkler system water flow switch will activate upon system flow and indicates an alarm condition by sounding an electrical alarm bell located on the exterior of the building. The sprinkler(s)will continue to flow water until the water control valve is manually closed. TESTING CRITERIA Hampshire Fire Protection, LLC is responsible for setting up and coordinating all sprinkler system testing including a 200 lb. hydrostatic test and testing of all water-flow, tamper, and alarm devices provided under this scope of work. All testing will be in accordance with NFPA 13, 2007 and the Massachusetts State Building Code. The Underground sprinkler service piping will be installed by another contractor. It is the responsibility of the installing contractor to provide Contractor Material and Test Certificates for Underground Piping and present them to the AHJ(s) as required. FIRE ALARM B y Others. System design criteria is based on Light Hazard Occupancy in the office and unused attic spaces of the building and Ordinary Hazard occupancy in the mechanical spaces and the portion of the first floor designed as retail and areas. Wet and dry sprinkler systems are calculated to provide a density of.10 GPM per square foot over the hydraulic remote areas in accordance with Sprinkler Head requirements and NFPA 13, 2007 remote areas calculations. An additional 100 GPM outside hose allowance added to the sprinkler demand for the Light Hazard Calculations and 250 GPM for the ordinary hazard Group II calculations. Additionally 50 GPM has been included in the hydraulic calculations for domestic water demand as calculated by NFPA standards. Seismic bracing, as required, shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of the MA Building Code and designed in accordance with NFPA 13, 2007. FIRE ALARMS: By Others. HVAC : By Others. The water from the water filled pipe is discharged from the sprinkler head(s) to control or help to extinguish the fire. The Fire Department may supplement the system by positioning a Fire Department pumper truck between a fire hydrant and the fire department connection. The sprinkler system water flow switch will activate upon system flow and indicate an alarm condition by sounding an electrical alarm bell located on the exterior of the building as well as sending a signal to the building's fire alarm system with the following resultant action: Indicate condition at the Fire Alarm Panel; Initiate building evacuation through FA Notification appliances; and Transmit alarm signal condition to the fire department through a 3 of 5 The Gate House-Lot 18 Village Hill Rd, Northampton, MA 10-04-12 & Rev. 4/12/2013 Section 4—Fire Protection Sprinkler System FIRE SPRINKLER System Description: Automatic sprinkler protection is provided throughout all areas of the building in accordance with NFPA 13, 2007 edition. Owner to provide heat throughout the entire building to maintain a minimum temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit for all areas of the building protected with a wet pipe sprinkler system. A 6-inch underground fire service main is capable of providing adequate water pressure and volume to the fire sprinkler system. This fire service main is connected to the city water main in the street. The latest flow test was conducted at 5:00 am on November 6, 2012 by the Northampton Water Department. The results and location are shown of FP-1 of the Sprinkler Shop Drawings. The results are as follows: Static— 106 Residual—99 Flow— 1455 GPM The gauge hydrant was located 25'-6"below the first floor elevation of the proposed building. Hydraulic calculations have taken this elevation difference into account. A 6-inch Double Check Backflow Assembly, with indicating isolation valves, is installed immediately upon the 6-inch water service main entrance into the building. A water flow switch is located on the wet system riser and will indicate water flow by sending a signal to the local alarm panel and activate the electric alarm bell. An alarm pressure switch is located on the dry system riser and will indicate water flow by sending a signal to the local alarm panel and activate the electric alarm bell. Quick response sprinklers are being utilized throughout the building areas.
