DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT
(82 Willow Street, Florence, MA - BARN)
Proposal for Restoration of Decrepit Section of Existing Barn:
The goal is to replace the roof on a 16' x 16' section of barn and replace /strengthen support structure
for same. The secondary goal is to place that roof section at a higher elevation than it currently is, to
allow for a future installation of an array of Photovoltaic Panels (not part of this proposal), for which the
structure is very well oriented, by avoiding shading from the existing adjacent 2 -story barn segment.
Raising the roof height will also improve utility of the current hayloft story. No change in the existing
footprint of the structure is planned.
The plan is to re -use an existing segment of house roof that is being removed and replaced (same
property, Permit #BP- 2013 -0345) and "re- purpose" it for use on a segment of the barn. The existing
house roof is strong and structurally sound. It will be adequately braced before removal, then separated
and lifted by crane, and set down on the lawn prior to moving to the barn location.
The segment of the barn that will receive the roof will be prepared using a conventional pole barn
configuration to include excavation of post holes to appropriate depth, concrete pour around pressure
treated laminated lower segments of columns, and partial concrete backfill. The remaining height of
posts will be built up with lapping joints, of non - treated lumber to desired height, allowing ridge heights
to align, and joined at the bearing walls with laminated plates. The roof structure will be lifted by crane
and set onto the prepared supporting structure and secured with hurricane clips. The front and rear
wall will be framed to accommodate doors and windows. The exterior will be completed with new
shiplap siding to match the existing barn structure.
Additional notes:
• (4) Columns — Laminated quadruple 2x8's
• Pressure treated material to be buried will be wolmanized.
• Beams made from triple 2x12's, nailed together.
• The 2 main beams of the barn will be 20' long sitting on top of the quadruple 2x8 laminated
posts. The roof and truss structure will sit on top of that beam structure. New posts will be
located 13' apart. Beams will cantilever 2.5' beyond each post.
