17D-020 DWD ENGINEERING, INC. 5 MICHAEL ROAD EAST BRIDGEWATER, MA 02333 (508) 378 -9602 FAX (508) 378 -2922 October 7, 2012 Mr. Louis Hasbrouck - Building Commissioner City of Northampton Building Department Puchalski Municipal Building 212 Main Street Northampton, MA 01060 RE: Capacity of Existing Roof to Support Proposed Solar Panel Array -King Residence 109 Straw Avenue - Florence, MA Dear Mr. Hasbrouck, This office reviewed the above referenced site for the purpose of determining whether the existing roof structure was capable of supporting an additional load introduced by the proposed solar panels. The following is a summation of our observations. There are a total of 17 solar panels proposed for the southern facing section of roof. These panels have a footprint of 64.5" x 38.7° and weigh 44.1 pounds each. This translates into a unit weight of 2.5 psf per panel. The support rails have a minimal unit weight (0.5 psf). The roof structure consists of exterior sheathing over 2x6 rafters at 24" on center spanning approximately 13 feet (horizontal dimension). The 8 Edition of the Massachusetts State Building Code (Residential) states that Northampton is in a 40 psf ground snow load. Assuming the rafters have properties of Spruce- Pine -Fir #2, they can safely support a total load of 22 psf. This includes a dead load of 10 psf and a snow (live) load of 12 psf which is less than the actual live load of 43 psf (40 +3). As such it is the recommendation of this office that 2x8 rafters be sistered (or equally spaced between the existing rafters) at the solar panel locations. The rafters should start within one foot from the outside wall and extend to within one foot of the ridge. They should be nailed to the existing rafters with 10d nails spaced at 4" on center located 2" from the bottom and 2" from the top. By doubling the rafters the live load that they can support is 47 psf in addition to a 10 psf dead load which will be greater than the actual live load of 43 psf. Based on the field observations and the information noted above it is my professional opinion that the existing roof is structurally sound and able to support the additional weight of the solar panels. The following is a summation of our observations. There are a total of 17 solar panels proposed for the southern facing section of roof. These panels have a footprint of 64.5" x 38.7" and weigh 44.1 pounds each.
