"That's all right."
Alex scowled through the glass. "No way. She's a rotten mother. Okay, she
had it rough. She's a rotten mother who had it rough."
I shook my head, waved my hands. "She does the best she can."
"Wow. Making excuses for her. You really are depressed. What has she ever
given - - ?"
"The last time I saw her," I said, "she took her bra off."
"So? Big fucking deal."
"She showed me her boobs. We both did."
"You what ?" Alex winced. "What's so funny ?"
In my mind 1 was lying on the floor with Maria Domingo's little Elena on my
naked belly and a gob of Valu -Bull strained carrots on my nipple and smeared on the
baby's upper lip. That was when I'd realized. Whenever I'd told a woman about
nuzzling Rose, their reactions - the smile, the smile sweetening disgust - told you all
about their mothers. I said, "Give her a hug for me."
"You're sick."
"Some day I'll tell you."
Every morning now I woke up counting days and weeks on my fingers, over
and over, trying to fix my last period. Curled up on my bunk, I was still lost in fog.
No matter how I counted, I kept coming out pregnant. In prison your thoughts play
on the hard blank surfaces like a movie projected against a wall. I was drifting in
unreality. It was horrible. A baby. A stupid blunder. A miracle. An intruder, a
tumor growing in your body. One more big shot in the traffic jam of life. Was I
going to be haunted forever by a monstrous reminder of Vic? IIe was reaching out of
the grave and clutching at me. I couldn't sleep, and when I did nod off 1 dreamed.
One night I swallowed a button and my mother tapped my belly with a soup spoon
which meant that the button was poisoning me. You need an operation, she insisted.
Don't you see you're dying? I let out a yell that woke everyone up. I was so
frightened that I was glad to hear Jenjen bark at me to shut up because I wished I
didn't have to be awake and I needed that slap of reality.
Of course you don't die. You get a little seasick after the first month and
sometimes you wake up with your innards in a knot. But your curiosity grows too.
What in the world is happening to me? What or who is this cramp stirring inside
me? You feel protective. On the morning shift Cheney, the helpful matron in her
white shirt with the black breast pocket flaps, warned me not to get attached. "For
your own sake," she said, "you should of got rid of it." When she snorts cigarette
smoke out her nose and ears, and you have to careful not to laugh.

sympathize. You must be busy -you know, settling Vic's affairs."
"It's not what you think. The estate's selling Safie Island. A Hong Kong tycoon
has plans for another casino."
"I can't help thinking of Vic in his undershirt painting the cottage as if he
could save his world at the last minute by rolling up his sleeves. He was dreaming of
living there."
"He was desperate to sell the island. He bought it with backdated options so he
was under investigation. He was losing the company. Broke. Living on borrowed

are you ?"
"What will happen to William without Vic and his drug? He's pretty
aggressive."
"You're changing the subject."
"Have they put him in a hospital ?"
"William's working for a private security company in the Middle East." Rob
put his palm up to the glass. "Now what about you ?"
"I'm waiting around miserably for my test results."
He smiled at the joke. "You'll be out of here in no time."
"Yes, but I'm pregnant."
The word knocked him back in his chair. For the first time he stammered.
"Why didn't you t -tell me ?" He grinned until he read the expression on my face.
Then his goofy amazement deflated in a long sigh. As if to himself he whispered,
"Ours ?"
"I don't know. I don't think so." I took a huge breath and changed the
subject. "What about Vic's work? He was taking money from the military at the end."
"That's not public information."
"I think he was desperate."
"Or he trusted you." Rob shrugged. "Barclay's put together a takeover d - deal
for the Carling Group. They're defense industry insiders. Business buys the test
tubes. Sometimes science is the hunchback servant."
"Sometimes the whole business feels monstrous to me. Poor Vic."
Ile winced. "Who doesn't need that ?"
We stared at each other through the wall of glass. It was like a cashier's
window keeping out germs, preventing a stickup. I had to smile at the lunacy of it.
Only the tinny robot voice could cross the barrier. Well, not exactly. In my mind's

When I showed Ofelia the ad that the Boston Women's Collective ran for
the Criminal Breast Fund, she held the clipping up to her blunt brown nose.
In the photo I could be a sorry -eyed lab monkey. "Don't you look awful," she
marveled. It's a long story, I say. "Shit," she snorts, "you in prison, girl. We
got forever."
'['his is the beauty of the correctional facility for women at Fort Nix.
The state of Florida provides essential vitamins from the macaroni and cheese
group, plus the tenderhearted Ofelia wondering how a warm breast put you
behind bars. With the corridor lights burning all night and the noises of a
hundred women struggling in their sleep, I could be back working at the
nursing home, before the love and horror.
The Criminal Breast ad puzzled Ofelia. "Then I realized that she was still
learning to read. Now we do a few new words together every day and it keeps
us out of each other's hair, because Ofelia's eighteen and really nosy. Sheller,
what's this word? This that silent i thing? But then: So how come the law
busted your bress in the fir splace?
At first the blurry words in People magazine surprised me, because in
those terrible moments with Vic I lost my glasses, and in prison I'd gotten used
to not seeing clearly.
Lying here now with my eyes closed on a mattress smelling of other
women's troubles, I can hear Ofeha's asthma sighing against the concrete wall
opposite. ft must be after midnight. She's taken to sharing her Brownie Bars
with me. You eating for two now, she says. When 1 feel a flutter, she likes to
put her ear on my belly. But then, Ofelia misses her little daughter and her
drugs. Sometimes when she's bummed out she rages at impossible words, cops,
white people, dealers, her asthma, on and on. Sometimes she'll let me calm her
with a hug, and I squeeze her so hard that her nipples feel like buttons against
my skin. If I croon some and pat her bony bottom, she cheers up enough to
keep trying.
So l lie here out of the «orld, out of time, with the corridor lights
and the body- noises, and the clock needs a new battery. Faces riffle in my

For the baby's sake 1 agreed to go along with the plea bargain Casey arranged.
But then in front of the judge, after all Casey's trouble, I messed up by pleading
innocent. Something took over my tongue and I had to do it. And in a way it turned
out all right, since they locked me up with Ofelia, whose grief put mine in
perspective. She was just a skinny kid really. As I was snuffling myself to sleep that
first night, Ofelia came over and patted my shoulder. When I said thanks, she put her
arms around me like you would a puppy, and 1 don't know what happened, I just let
go. I was sobbing and she stroked my head and my back, a little too hard, the way
kids' bodies at out their strong feelings. Dragging in the humid, asthmatic air, she
could have been heaving sandbags onto a flooding riverbank,
"If you don't quit carrying on," she said, "that little baby gonna come out of
you all shriveled up like a old lady. You gonna love that kid. You already do." After
awhile I was calmer and she asked if 1 wanted her to buzz me, as off - handed as if she
was offering me a cigarette and not bodily relief. Just hold me, I said, and she
squashed my face against her hard ribs and her prison smock smelling of french
fries and sweat. Neither of us said a word.
Except for a few fits of rage, we got along. She was mostly reading on her own
now, with scarcely any help. Thanks to Ofelia, I learned all about the hot new
rappers and their harems and diamonds and coke rampages and drive -by business
deals. When Alex sent me the Women's Collective's ad for the Criminal Breast Fund,
Ofelia wanted to know if it was true, and I said It is and it isn't, and she said, Tell me
the part that is, then.
Ofelia couldn't understand why I wouldn't see Rob in visitors hours. I said, "I
can't face him yet. It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
"You got this baby," she said in wonderment and disgust. "You got this man, he
comes here looking for you. Shit. You too proud, girl."
So I put Rob on my list and he turned up on the other side of the glass in a
turtleneck and a pecan windbreaker instead of the trademark black suit coat. The
wild hair was shorter if not exactly tame. My own hair had grown out into clownish
tufts. I said, "I hope you didn't come all the way down here just to see me. We only
have a few minutes."
"Just like life." He leaned in so close the thick glass turned the creases on his
forehead into a quizzical mask. On my side of the barrier his words came out of a

locker in the dinghy along with a breath mints tin containing marijuana dust older
than the Garden of Eden. Instead of prosecuting, the Feds handed me over to the state
to face manslaughter charges based on Rigoberta's outcry in front of the medics: "She
kill him!" Once she calmed down of course, Rigoberta tried to take back the
accusation. But Steve and Juana confirmed her words, and the security camera
footage of Vic's last moments could be interpreted as a scuffle.
In the fingerprinting routine I had to show my palms to an officer, but the
blistering had left my hands curled up, and when I tried to explain, the women
forced my fingers open, so the skin split and got messy, and I began to feel pain
again. That's when I heard my own voice, like someone talking to me from another
room, say How did this happen? How did you lose yourself?
Although he was superstitious about the idea of prison, Boy came down from
Atlanta to visit me. Hunched over the microphone on the other side of the plate
glass, sweat gleaming on his beaky nose, he reminded me of the stuffed buzzard Vic
and I admired in the Geneva museum once upon a time. Once he warmed up, Boy was
full of entrepreneurial. ardor. We would pitch my story as a docudrama to Fox TV, and
he would be my agent. At the trial we would explain the commotion on the security
camera by testifying that I was trying to take Vic to my breast in a frantic attempt to
nurse him back to life. Like the Holy Mother and Jesus. With an advance on the
story, we could get me out on bail. With photo op. Beautiful, no? Actually he said it
in italics: Beautiful, no? I told him no in italics. My blistered hands were peeling.
Alex was good to me. With the glasses she brought the world began to come out
of the haze. Jerry wondered about visiting me, but Florida is a grueling trip, even on
his new Harley- Davidson, and he had a new girlfriend now. No sign of Rob. "He must
be busy inheriting money," Alex said. No, I wanted to say, he'd be upset. He might be
popping pills or jumping out of planes to focus his feelings. How could I blame him?
He'd know 1 was with Vic in the end. He'd realize I wasn't innocent. "But he can
help," Alex said. "Just tell him. You're not guilty."
"But I'm not innocent either."
"Vic was ?"
"He loved me."
"So? Like, what would that prove ?"
"I know what I did."
"Shelley, the man had a heart condition."
"I know what I felt."
"It's this rat hole doing a guilt trip on you. Lee couldn't bring herself to come
down here. She can't handle the idea of a prison."
heaters an exemption. The testing has taken the building to the next level
as we can see cause and effect of variations on air supply, size Toad,
moisture of wood, etc.. I'm committed to making the most efficient heaters
possible. To date we are seeing particulate emissions of our heaters in the
pellet stove range.
Your the first inspector to ask me for drawings of the core. Most of the time
the heater will be on the plans of the contractor /architect and I inform them/
inspector about the ASTM standards if they don't know. Please call me if
you have any questions or concerns. I'd like to start on the core next week,
please let me know if that will be possible.

One issue that inspectors sometimes have is with the air source, they want
to see outside air. Most of the heater community prefers not to do this for 2
reasons: unless you preheat the air it brings cool air into an environment
that needs to be hot to burn efficient and two, it created extra work /cost.
The worry of depressurization due to the air consumed by a heater has
never been proven in my knowledge to happen. A study was done in
Canada in several R2000 homes to see how many CFM's a heater
consumes. The conclusion was that overfire (no large grate underneath
wood= more efficient) heaters consumed less than 65 CFM "S.

sighting along the barrel, he shouted something like "Where did it go ?" which made
no sense, and waved his hands as if he was about to hug me to his breast.
At first I thrashed and splashed and went nowhere. Finally I began to count
the strokes: One . . . Two . . . Three . . . Four . . . . The waves pushed me back
toward the shore. I kept pulling at the oars.
Then for no reason William turned and retraced his steps. Sweat leaked into
my eyes. Four hundred one . . . Two . . . Three . . . Four . . . . The island began
to fall away. A medivac helicopter sputtered into earshot. Without my glasses the
machine was a speck of diret on the blinding sky. The huge weight of the sun
seemed to press the speck down into the palms where the house would be. They had
medical stuff. Science would jolt the heart to life again. It had rebelled before. He'd
come back. My body pulled at the oars. Seven hundred and something strokes later
the helicopter rose above the trees again and slanted off toward the horizon. Only
two seagulls came after me.
Keeping the island astern, I would pull into the harbor at Elysium_ if 1 rowed
long enough. Since I didn't care, I didn't bother twisting about to check my bearings.
It didn't matter, you see. I wanted the relief of blisters and numbness. I wanted to be
a contraption of reflexes and compulsion, a slave, with no future, no guilt. No terror.
Four thousand and one . . . Four thousand and two. . . . Four thousand and three . .
. . I was blind to my watch and the blistered skin on my hands and the sun in my
eyes. Ten thousand and five . . . Ten thousand and six . . . . The oars beat the
water but the boat just rocked in place. Haze dissolved Safie Island. As the sun went
down haze a tiny ship inched across the horizon. There was no point in signaling.
The seagulls had long since given up. My brain no longer counted. My arms stopped
pulling at sticks of wood. It was all empty ocean now, serene and meaningless.
During the night a chill fog settled on the water. There was no comfortable
position, and after squirming, struggling to hold up my head, 1 curled up in the
puddle at the bottom of the boat, my legs under the seat, and rocked myself in the
dark. Waves lapped against the boat with a trickling, dripping noise. My skin was
hot and I felt sick from too much sun. What did it matter if the boat drifted. I had no
place to go.

HOME OWNER EXEMPTION ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The State of Massachusetts allows the homeowner the right under 780CMR 108.3.4 to
act as his/her construction supervisor. The state defines "Homeowner" as, " Person(s)
who owns a parcel on which he/she resides or intends to be, a one or two family
dwelling, attached or detached structures accessory to such use and/or farm structures. A
person who constructs more than one home in a two -year period shall not be considered a
home owner."
The building department for the City of Northampton wants person(s) who seek to use
the home owner exemption, to act as their own construction supervisor, to be aware that
by doing so you become responsible for compliance with state building codes and
regulations. The inspection process requires that the building department be called to
inspect work at various stages, which include foundation /footings (before backfill),
sonotube holes (before pour), a rough building inspection (before work is
concealed), insulation inspection (if required) and a final building inspection. The
building department requires these inspections before the work is concealed, failure to
secure these inspections can result in failure to obtain a certificate of occupancy
until the work can be inspected.
If the homeowner hires other trades to perform work (electrical, plumbing & gas) the
homeowner will be responsible to make sure that the trades hired secure their proper
iermits in conjunction to the building permit issued, and that they get their required
inspections. Failure of the individual trades to secure the permits and inspections as
required can DELAY the project until such time as the proper permits and inspections are
made
I, understand the above.
(Home owner /resident's signature requesting exemption)
I will call to schedule all required building inspections necessary for the building permit
issued to
