Ts General Contractors Residential Commercial lnstitu . tri al REC _ June 7, 2012 I 201 To: Louis Hasbrouck Building Commissioner D s 1060 Building NORTHAAhF PdA01060 Town of Northampton City Hall, 210 Main Street Northampton, MA 01060 Re: ACME Automotive 220 King Street Northampton, MA 01060 Louis: On June 4. 2012, I visited the above address to observe the progress of construction of this project. Construction is underway to install a series of new Photo Voltaic Arrays on the roof of this existing structure. The existing building's roof is constructed from several different construction types. The north end roof is constructed form angle steel trusses at 7 - -0'` on center. The center north area of this roof structure is composed of 2x8 rafters supported by interior knee walls above the ceiling line and C.M.U. walls below. The center south roof structure is composed of steel columns and built up nominal lumber beams. The South end of this structure has pre - engineered roof trusses. The new photovoltaic arrays shall be installed at the north end and both of the center roof types. At the time of my observation tradesmen from Northeast Solar were in the process of setting connection anchors that will attach new aluminum tube array supports to the existing north roof structure. Previously, Northeast Solar had installed new flush 7 ' /z'" deep LVL beams sistered to the existing 2x8 rafters in the roof system located at the center north of the building. The new LVL beams are supported by nominal wood columns located in knee walls above the existing ceiling joists. Below the ceiling joists there are C.M.U. bearing walls down to foundation. I observed that the correct size of LVL's were used and that the nominal wood columns have been installed. However, the tradesmen still needed to install vertical 2x squash block in- between the ceiling joists at the locations of the new nominal wood columns. the C.M.U. I discussed this matter with both Northeast lead installer and the owner of the building they indicated that these wood blocks would be installed. It is my impression that construction is proceeding as specified in the contract documents produced by Silverhack Solar dated 4/2/12. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.
