Northampton, Mass. 01060 December 27, 1982 Petition of Northampton Meadowbrook Associates to State Building Code Board of Appeals for Waiver of the Requirements of Chapter 143, Section 3R Reasons for petition: 1. The existing electrically operated striker mechanisms are easily defeated by pulling or prying. 2. The existing mechanisms are easily vandalized and rendered use- less. They are not easily protected against such damage. 3. The useful life of a heavy -duty striker mechanism is approxi- mately two (2) weeks under present usage. 1. Petitioner has explored the use of alternative devices none of which are applicable. (See attached #2) 5. Continued repair /replacement of the striker mechanism in the petitioners eighteen (18) buildings on a monthly basis causes a serious manpower and financial hardship on the petitioner. 6. Non - functioning striker mechanisms make the petitioner liable for prosecution under Chapter 143, Massachusetts State Building Code, Chapter 183, State Sanitary Code, and Consumer Protection Code. (See attached #3) The petitioner has the following security measures in force that ade- quately protect the residents: 1. Each exterior building door is with a metal door and frame, equipped with a self - closure and automatic lock. 2. Each apartment interior door is metal with metal frame equipped with a wide angle viewer, self - closure, and an automatic lock and one- inch dead bolt. 3. Interior and exterior lighting exceeds code requirements. 4.. A night -time security staff patrols the buildings and grounds. Relief requested: The petitioner respectfully requests that the board grant a waiver of the electric striker requirements of Chapter 14.3, Section 3R, and such other relief it may deem proper.
