On April 6, 2011, I personally inspected the roof of the main house. The rafters are full dimension 2x6 (actual dimension: 1%" x 5W) spaced at 24 inches on center. The roof slope is approximately 35 deg. and the horizontal span is 12 feet from the outside of the exterior wall to the ridgeline. There are short kneewalls located approximately 5 feet in from the exterior walls, bearing on the second floor joists. Even though PV panels do not hold snow for very long, any supporting structure must still be capable of resisting the-Code-required snow loads. For a single family residence in Northampton, the ground snow load p is -50 psf (pounds per square foot). This translates to a sloped roof snow load p of 20 psf, assuming the snow is free to slide off the PV surface. The rafters appear to be native softwood lumber. According to ICBO Uniform Code for $fig Conservation Section - Allowable Stress s for A baic Materials, "Joists and rafters may be assumed to have an allowable bending stress equal to that of select structural grade lumber." Based on my assessment of the exposed portions of the framing, this assumption is reasonable. The quality of the lumber is good: knots are small and slope of grain is not excessive, and so select structural grade is appropriate in this case. For Eastern Softwood species in Select Structural Grade, this rafter cross- section should be able to safely resist a uniformly distributed load of 50 psf. This analysis does not include any support provided by the kneewalls, which is conservative. Kneewalls may provide support, but that can overload the floor. Roof dead loads, including the PV array, shingles, sheathing, rafters and ceiling should be about 18 psf ' when adjusted for the slope. 'Thus the total load is 18 +.20 = 38 psf, which is clearly less than 50 psf. Therefore, given the parameters and assumptions described above, this roof should be able to support the PV array and the snow loads prescribed by the residential Building Code. Respectfully, .
