24D-269 DWD ENGINEERING, INC. 5 MICHAEL ROAD EAST BRIDGEWATER, MA 02333 FAX (508) 378 -2922 (508) 378 -9602 August 25, 2011 Mr. Louis Hasbrouck - Building Commissioner City of Northampton Building Department 212 Main Street Northampton, MA 01060 RE: Capacity of Existing Roof to Support Proposed Solar Panel Array Roth Residence 153 Franklin Street - Northampton, MA Dear Mr. Hasbrouck, This office reviewed the above referenced site for the purpose of determining whether the existing roof structure was capable of supporting an additional load introduced by the proposed solar panels. The following is a summation of our observations. There are a total of 14 solar panels proposed for the southern facing section of roof. These panels have a footprint of 58.3" x 39.1" and weigh 37.0 pounds each. This translates into a unit weight of 2.5 psf per panel. The support rails have a minimal unit weight (0.5 psf). The roof structure consists of exterior sheathing over 2 "x6" rafters at 24" on center spanning approximately 9 feet (horizontal dimension). The 8th Edition of the Massachusetts State Building Code states that Northampton is in a 50 psf ground snow load which translates into a 38.5 psf flat roof snow load (0.7"Ct *Ce *Pg *I). Assuming the rafters have the properties of Spruce- Pine -Fir #2 they can safely support a design load of 46 psf in addition to a 10 psf dead load which is higher than the actual load of approximately 41.5 psf (38.5 +3) that it will be subjected to. Based on the field observations and the information noted above it is my professional opinion that the existing roof is structurally sound and able to support the additional weight of the solar panels.
