Vreeland Design Associates Re: Bill Girard, 40 Washington Ave, Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing house and addition roofs to support proposed PV solar panel arrays. I have investigated the house and the newly renovated addition roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installations. Based on the Assessor’s records, the original 2-story, 20’x 29’ gabled roof house was constructed around 1900. A 2-story, 20’x 20’ addition off the back southeast gable end appears to have been constructed at a later date. The addition has been recently renovated with new roof framing. 7 PV solar panels are to be installed on the southwest facing roof and 6 solar panels on the northeast facing roof of the original house and 8 solar panels on the southwest facing roof of the addition. The house roof is framed with 2”x 5” rafters installed 24” on-center spanning 9’-8” with a 7/12 roof pitch. The attic floor framing is secured to the side of the 2x4 studs of the exterior walls and rafters are secured to the 2x4 top plate preventing the roof from spreading. The new roof of the addition is framed with 2x10 rafters installed 16” on-center, spanning 9’-6” with a 7/12 roof pitch. The rafters are secured to the 2x10 attic joists preventing the roof from spreading. The house and addition roofing are composite asphalt shingles. The original house rafters supporting the solar panels have to long of a span to support the solar panels and meet the requirements of the current building code. Reinforce the existing southwest and the northeast rafters supporting the solar panels by sistering new 2x6x8’, centered on the length of the existing rafters and nailed with 2 - nailgun 10d/12d nails at 6” on-center along the length of the new 2x6s or screwed to the existing rafters with 2 – 2-7/8” HeadLok, FlatLok or TrussLok-Z screws at 12” on-center along the length of the new 2x6. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed PV solar panel arrays. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 48± lbs, with the attachment points of the solar panel arrays placed at a maximum of 4’ on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one reinforced house rafter, as outlined above, and the addition rafters are adequate to support the proposed PV solar panel arrays and the 40 psf ground and 35 psf roof snow loads and the 117 mph Vult basic wind speed requirements of the current 9th Edition of the MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton. IQ8MA-12A-DS-0069-03-EN-US-2022-12-27 Tech Brief Solar Is Not Always Sunny Over their lifetime, solar panels experience countless extreme weather events. Not just the worst storms in years, but the worst storms in 40 years. High winds capable of ripping panels from a roof, and snowfalls weighing enough to buckle a panel frame. XR Rails are the structural backbone preventing these results. They resist uplift, protect against buckling and safely and efficiently transfer loads into the building structure. Their superior spanning capability requires fewer roof attachments, reducing the number of roof penetrations and the amount of installation time. XR Rail Family Force-Stabilizing Curve Sloped roofs generate both vertical and lateral forces on mounting rails which can cause them to bend and twist. The curved shape of XR Rails is specially designed to increase strength in both directions while resisting the twisting. This unique feature ensures greater security during extreme weather and a longer system lifetime. Compatible with Flat & Pitched Roofs Roof Mount utilizes XR Rails, along with optional all-in-one attachments, to secure systems flush against residential roofs. Corrosion-Resistant Materials XR Rails are compatible with FlashFoot and other pitched roof attachments. IronRidge offers a range of tilt leg options for flat roof mounting applications. All XR Rails are made of 6000-series aluminum alloy, then protected with an anodized finish. Anodizing prevents surface and structural corrosion, while also providing a more attractive appearance. XR Rail Family The XR Rail Family offers the strength of a curved rail in three targeted sizes. Each size supports specific design loads, while minimizing material costs. Depending on your location, there is an XR Rail to match. © 2020 IronRidge, Inc. All rights reserved. Visit www.ironridge.com or call 1-800-227-9523 for more information. The unique water seal design is both elevated and encapsulated, delivering redundant layers of protection against water intrusion. In addition, the twist-on Cap perfectly aligns the rail attachment with the lag bolt to maximize mechanical strength. FlashFoot2® Twist-On Cap FlashFoot2®’s unique Cap design encapsulates the lag bolt and locks into place with a simple twist. The Cap helps FlashFoot2® deliver superior structural strength, by aligning the rail and lag bolt in a concentric load path. Single Socket Size A custom-design lag bolt allows you to install FlashFoot2® with the same 7/16” socket size used on other Flush Mount Three-Tier Water Seal FlashFoot2®’s seal architecture utilizes three layers of protection. An elevated platform diverts water away, while a stack of rugged components raises the seal an entire inch. The seal is then fully-encapuslated by the Cap. FlashFoot2® is the first solar attachment to pass the TAS-100 Wind-Driven Water-Shedding Design An elevated platform diverts water away from the water seal. © 2022 IronRidge, Inc. Version 1.01 Tech Brief Installation Features Testing & Certification Structural Certification Designed and Certified for Compliance with the International Building Code & ASCE/SEI-7. Water Seal Ratings Water Sealing Tested to UL 441 Section 27 “Rain Test” and TAS 100-95 “Wind Driven Rain Test” by Intertek. Ratings applicable for composition shingle roofs having slopes between 2:12 and 12:12. UL 2703 Conforms to UL 2703 Mechanical and Bonding Requirements. See Flush Mount Install Manual for full ratings. Alignment Markers Quickly align the flashing with chalk lines to find pilot holes. Rounded Corners Makes it easier to handle and insert under the roof shingles. Reinforcement Ribs Help to stiffen the flashing and prevent any bending or crinkling during installation. A B C E B C Benefits of Concentric Loading Traditional solar attachments have a horizontal offset between the rail and lag bolt, which introduces leverage on the lag bolt and decreases uplift capacity. FlashFoot2® is the only product to align the rail and lag bolt. This concentric loading design results in a stronger attachment for the system. A ® ®
