I was born in Northampton and have lived here all of my almost 69 years. My husband, Fin,
who is almost 77 has lived here since 1971. We have lived in our home for over 39 years.
We are the last house on a dead-end street next to no longer used conservation land. It is
now a very quiet area with no traffic. Due to Fin's illness,we have been advised by
numerous doctors that moving would be a detriment to his well-being.
Fin is an honorably discharged disabled Vietnam Veteran who received medals and awards
throughout his service. Along with his service-connected health issues, he has been
diagnosed with Alzheimer's and mixed Dementia.
Our daughter(Erin) and her life partner (Ben) live in our 960 square foot home in order to
help us.
We are not able to park the car in the garage because of the needed extra refrigerator and
freezer, as well as all the traditional tools and storage, along with Ben's tools for his work.
We have been able to make it all work until recently-it is now a serious issue.
The winters are more difficult for my husband when we need to leave the house for doctors'
appointments (from 1 to 6 per week). Our driveway is a rather steep hill. With his current
lack of dexterity and mobility he has already fallen a few times and broken bones.
We are asking for an additional 12 inches over the side yard allowance to allow for a 1-1/2
car garage to have enough room for a ramp and to facilitate moving him from a wheelchair
to the car. Because his physical abilities are weakening,we anticipate his needing a
wheelchair within a couple of years.
We are also asking for the garage not to be set back 10 feet from the front of the house
because we need the extra long garage to fit tools and the extra refrigerator and freezer. If
we were to have to set the garage back 10 feet, with our home being only 22 feet deep,we
would not only not have the space needed, but it would also take up the only shady area in
our backyard, and my husband especially likes to sit outside in this space to watch nature.
It is a calming place for him (and me as well).
If we must have a set-back,we are asking for a 2-foot set-back so we have some room in our
backyard and are also able to use the extended garage area for storage. (Our current garage
will be used as much-needed additional living space.)
We have discussed our plan with our neighbors, and they all agree this is a great idea for
our family.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for your consideration.
