The intent of these trails is to provide meaningful, equitable site access so that all users can experience the variety of habitats across the site. Ecological Restoration Cutting Block A cutting block is a strategic planting of willows, alders, dogwoods, or other fast-growing wetland shrubs that provides habitat and shade cover, as well as a resource material for cutting live stakes for additional plantings. The live stakes can be used to further enhance wetland plantings either on-site or elsewhere in the City. This approach can achieve a variety of elevations that allow for engagement of groundwater sporadically throughout a section of the site, rather than a wholesale lowering of the floodplain with a corresponding need to store the excavated material elsewhere. Other habitat enhancements in this area will include heavy planting of preferred food sources. These actions are intended to invite beavers into this reach of the brook and allow them to do the job of raising water levels to engage the floodplain, rather than excavating to bring the floodplain down to the existing stream elevation.
