RE: Invasive Plant removal, Mitigation Planting, 115 Bridge Street, Northampton
Dear Bruce:
I have reviewed the area behind Tom Horton's barn for the presence of invasive species. The
species of concern present in this area is Yell ow Iris, which appears in two places; at the edge of
the pond, and near the end of the dug channel leading to the drainage pipe. The Yellow Iris is a
recognized invasive species and will be entirely removed from resource areas and buffer zones.
There are other non-native species in the vicinity of the pond and channel, including Weeping
Willow, Day-lily, Siberian Iris and an ornamental water lily, but none of these are invasives.
Other Willows are present as seedlings ~ I am assuming these are native seedlings, since they are
neither Weeping nor Crack Willow, and I am not aware of any other common non-native
Willows.
Landscape architect Craig Stevens has prepared a planting plan, which I have not yet seen but
that he and I have discussed, in which he proposes to install native shrub species per our
discussion during an on-site meeting last week. These shrubs are Shadbush (Amelanchier
canadensis), Sweet Pepper Bush (Clethra alnifolia), Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) and Streamco
or Bankers Willow (Salix purpurea or Salix exigua). Technically speaking, Streamco Willow is
not a native in that it was introduced during the colonial period. However, it has naturalized, is
not invasive and is routinely used in bioengineered designs. But if you would prefer that it not
be used in this instance, it will be removed from the design.
Thank you for your consideration of this planting plan. We hope this will be the last step in the
permitting process for this project.
