Re/Project: 227 South Street Renovation Project, Driveway Traffic Analysis.
Danielle,
You asked that we analyze the traffic as a result of the referenced project to create 8 apartments as
it compares to the sites previous use as a veterenary clinic. I contacted Carolyn Misch with
Northampton Planning to discuss requirements for the analysis. We discussed a letter stating
previous traffic comparison to an estimate of proposed traffic would satisfy the requirement.
The previous use as a veterenary clinic with an apartment on the upper story had the following
estimte for vehicle traffic based on information received from the previous owners:
14 veterenary staff members = 2 trips per day per member. Total of 28 trips for staff per day.
80 veterenary appointments as estimated by previous owners = 160 trips per day, or 20 trips per
hour, if veterenary appointments are spread throughout an 8 hour day.
1 apartment = 2 trips per day
The proposed use of 8 apartment/townhouses is estimated at 2 trips per day per apartment = 16
trips per day
The daily trips then is estimated to be 190 trips for the previous veterenary use vs. 16 trips for the
apartment townhouse use. Or reduction in daily traffic of 1.74 trips for the proposed use.
Estimating peak hour trips, assuming half the apartment trips in each condition are at peak, half the
veterenary staff trips are at peak, and 1 hour of vet clinic traffic is at peak times, then:
Previous use as Veterenary clinic and 1 apartment peak hour traffic is 20 + 7 + 1 = 28 trips during
peak.
Proposed use of 8 apartments at peak is 8 trips per day.
The resulting estimate is a reduction of 20 trips during peak hour with the proposed use.
If you have any questions, give me a call. Thank you.
Sincerely;
John Wallen, P.E.
