REINFORCED CONCRETE (continued)
10. Appearance of finished concrete shall be approved by the Architect.
11. Formwork shall be clean and tight. Use form -ties that break off flush with the concrete surface.
12. All reinforcing shall be clean and properly supported. Concrete cover shall be provided for all
reinforcement as follows:
Concrete poured against earth: 3 inches
Concrete exposed to earth or weather: 1.5 1-Y inches (#5 and smaller);
2 inches (#6 and bigger)
Concrete not exposed to earth or weather: 0.75 inches (#11 and smaller)
Slabs on grade: 2 inches @ bottom
1 inch @ top
13. Horizontal reinforcing shall be continuous in all walls; lap bars 48 bar diameters, 24" minimum;
Provide 90 degree corner bars.
14. Formwork shall be clean and free of standing water, ice, oils, debris or other deleterious materials.
15. Concrete shall be placed monolithically between joints, and deposited without loss or segregation of
ingredients, creation of voids, or disturbance of reinforcing.
16. Concrete factory -mixed or transit -mixed shall not be altered in the field after delivery.
17. Concrete shall be cured according to ACI recommendations, based on weather conditions and the type and
size of members.
18. Slab control joints shall be sawcut without collateral damage to slab; joints in slabs exposed to view shall
be approved by the Owner, and shall be spaced at a maximum of 15 feet in each direction; joint layout shall
provide slab panels that are as square as possible; every other wire shall be cut at the joints.
CONSTRUCTION CONTROL - SUBMITTALS
1. The following information shall be submitted for review in a timely fashion:
a. Concrete mix design including admixtures
2. 48 hours notice shall be provided for any inspections required for Construction Control. No foundation
structural elements shall be hidden by subsequent construction without inspection.
CONSTRUCTION CONTROL - TESTS t SPECIAL INSPECTIONS
1. Concrete: field test at time of delivery for slump, air content, and temperature.
Compression Strength Test cylinders shall be made per ASTM C 31 and tested per ASTM C 39.
2. Additional tests, retests, repairs or replacements shall be made at the expense of the Contractor.
3. Engineer's inspections do not substitute for inspections performed by the Local Building Inspector.

GENERAL FOUNDATION NOTES
1. All Foundation Work shall conform to the Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR), 9th Edition
2. The Foundation Drawings are based on information shown on the Architectural Drawings. The Contractor
shall coordinate all dimensions, elevations, and details with the Architectural Drawings. In the case of
conflict, the most stringent requirement shall control. If discrepancies or other field conditions are
discovered the Architect and Engineer shall be notified prior to the continuation of construction.
3. Dimensions and elevations of existing construction given in structural drawings are based on limited
field observations and measurements. The contractor shall verify all information pertaining to existing
conditions by actual measurement and observation at the site. All discrepancies between actual conditions
and those shown in the drawings shall be reported to the Architect and Engineer for evaluation before the
affected construction is put in place.
4. Before starting any part of the project, examine the as -built structure, substrates and installation
conditions. Do not proceed with construction of any portion of the building until unsatisfactory
conditions have been corrected. Subsequent installation constitutes acceptance of existing conditions
and responsibility for satisfactory performance.
