On 6/2/21, I conducted a site visit and investigated the roof framing in the area for the proposed PV solar panel array. The original 1-story, 44,248 ft2 bricked face CMU exterior wall school was constructed in 1966. In 1973 a 54'x 91' gym addition was intergrated into the west side of the building. 80 PV solar panels are to be installed as a ballasted array on the flat roof as shown below. I have reviewed the original blueprints and confirmed on site that the 16-J-7 steel bar joists shown on the plans at 4' on-center are what was installed. The bar joists span 28' and are supported on 8' CMU bearing walls. The original gravel ballasted built-up roofing has been removed and replaced with an adhesive based EPDM membrane roofin: s stem. V , • Proposed 80 PV Solar Panels lloc, ..: Wii E rY S yid ,-z ffl'• The PV solar panels will be secured to a ballasted rack system using 1 to 2—32 lb. concrete ballast blocks in each of the rack's ballast pans. The ballast pans are located 5'-8"o.c. along the length of the solar panels and 4'-11"o.c. along the width of the panels. The ballasted array, designed by Ecolibrium Solar,Athens, OH, has been designed for a 124 mph basic wind speed, Vo and a ground snow load of 40 psf. 116 River Road, Leyden, MA 01337 Phone: (413) 624-0126 Email: dvreeland@verizon.net Fax: (413) 624-3282 Given a solar panel unit weight of 45 lbs and with the required number ballast blocks, the average weight of the ballasted racks and solar panels will be 4.3 psf for the 80 solar panels. I was not able to determine the exact make up of the EPDM roof system, but assumed a conservative dead load of approximately 10 psf. The original built-up gravel roof system would have weighed in the range of 15 to 20 psf. I have assessed the load capacity of the existing steel bar joist roof framing using 40 psf roof snow load and 20 psf dead load. Based on my calculations,the existing roof framing is adequate to support the proposed ballasted PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
