Main Street‐Florence Streetscape Improvements
Request for Engineering Quotes
1/28/2021 (revised 2/1/21)
The City of Northampton is requesting quotes for engineering work to design streetscape improvements
in the Village of Florence, Northampton.
The design work is all on Main Street, Florence, except as noted, and includes:
1. Installing 15 Sidewalk ramps (wheelchair ramps), in compliance with ADA standards.
2. Squaring off one curb (southwest intersection of Main St, South Main St, and Locust St, Florence
3. Reconstructing six or more tree pits/boxes (adding structural soil, replacing adjacent sidewalk
panels, and installing flexi‐pavement over the tree box opening after the city installs the trees, so
the design is similar to the recently completed Cumberland Farms tree pits). There is an
underground utility duct that will impact the tree pit depth and may require some relocation of
existing tree boxes. The city will do the planting of the trees after the tree boxes are installed.
4. Installing three benches
5. Installing one trash receptacle
6. Installing several bike hitches (Dero or equivalent)
7. Replacing bad sidewalk panels in the Florence Dinner and the Northampton Cooperative Bank area
(the areas with the worst sidewalk panels).
The Scope of Work includes
1. Work with Planning & Sustainability (project manager and overseeing all scoping) and Northampton
DPW (engineer and tree warden for design approval on the design).
2. Prepare or subcontract any necessary supplemental survey (Main Street right of way survey was
completed in 2021 and is attached and available in electronic form but does not include topography)
3. Prepare draft and final plans, specifications, and estimates
4. Prepare the bid package
5. Address contractor questions and advise the city during bid review
6. Conduct construction administration at key points during the construction.
This is a city‐funded project so no MassDOT or other external are required.
The city hopes to go to bid in 2021, ideally in time for all or at least partial 2021 construction if that is
feasible.
