Smith College Facilities Management will undertake annual sediment redistribution within Paradise Pond. The Pond will
be partially drawn down on Monday, December 6, 2021, weather permitting. Sediment will be redistributed within
Paradise Pond via mechanical equipment (bulldozer & excavator) from higher elevations to lower elevations including the
river channel, within the Pond. Within the area proposed for redistribution the Pond bottom will be graded to elevation
134', about 2' below normal pool. Some sediment is expected to be transported by river flow through the dam sluice and
settle within the plunge pool below the spillway. We expect some sediment will pass further downstream settling in the
river below Lamont Bridge. The work is expected to take 2 weeks. Restoration of the Pond to normal pool should be
complete by December 24 depending on flow.
*Taking advantage of the partial drawdown, invasive plants on the Pond Island will be surveyed and inventoried for
eventual control activities in 2022. The brush will be mowed following the survey. Minor damage to the flashboards will be
repaired.
See links below for current Pond and River conditions. USGS data is updated hourly. Pond data is updated 4 times/hour.
Webcams are live.
