He had not been in good health for several weeks but had not given up his college work. Prof Stoddard was a descendant of Rev Solomon Stoddard, a famous early Northampton minister and a grandfather of Jonathan Edwards. His grandfather, also named Solomon Stoddard, was clerk of the Northampton courts. The Tappans were a prominent family of Northampton merchants. Prof Stoddardʼs father was William Henry Stoddard of Northampton and his mother was a daughter of Dr Humphrey of Southwick. He was born in Northampton, October 20, 1852, and was graduated from Amherst college in 1874. In 1875, he was assistant principal of the Northampton high school, and the following two years studied chemistry in the university of Gottingen, Ger., from which he received the degree of Ph.D. Prof Stoddardʼs connection with Smith college began in 1878, when he was appointed instructor in physics and mathematics and he has been head of the chemistry department since 1897. He was a member of the Deutsche Chemische Gesollscha and of the American chemical society. His books include “Outline of Qualitative Experiments in General Chemistry,” “Lecture Notes on General Chemistry,” and “Introduction to General Chemistry.” He had been a contributor of scientific articles to reviews, encyclopedias and magazines. Another book of Prof Stoddardʼs recalls his membership in the Northampton club, - a book on the science of billiards, of which it has been said it a orded “delightful glimpses of the author as a gentleman and scholar.” Prof Stoddard was a member of St Botolphʼs club of Boston. He won considerable recognition among those interested in photography and from the general public by his successful experiments in composite photography, among which were composite photographs of the members of graduating classes at leading colleges. Prof Stoddard married, June 26, 1879, Mary Grover Leavitt, daughter of Dr William S Photo added by P.K. Leavitt, pastor of the Northampton First church, who survives him, as do also three children, Dr James Stoddard, who has just returned from service in France, William S Stoddard of Cambridge and Mrs Dorothy Stoddard Ginscock of Columbia, Mo. The funeral arrangements are not yet made. The funeral will be held Thursday a ernoon at 2:30 at the home. Prof H.M. Tyler and Present L. Clark Seelye will o iciate. Burial will be in Bridge street cemetery. John Tappan Stoddard was born in Northampton and was educated at Amherst College. He received Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Gottingen, Germany, in 1877. Dr. Stoddard was a member of the American Chemistsʼ Society and the author of many books on chemistry.
