He was 89. Born in Middlebury, Vt, he was graduated from Amherst College with the class of 1869 and entered business with a brother-in-law, A. Lyman Williston. A er several years in business he went to England, attended Oxford University for three years, and on his return became a teacher at the University of California. In 1888, Dr Stoddard came to the University of New York. He continued as head of the English department until 1914 and from 1910 to 1914 also was dean of the College of Arts and Pure Science. Dr Stoddard was descended from Anthony Stoddard, who came to Boston in 1639 and whose son, Solomon, was the first librarian of Harvard University. Others of his ancestors played prominent parts in New England educational a airs. He was married May 15, 1873 to Lucy M. Smith of Springfield, Mass, who died in 1924. Surviving him is one daughter, Miss Lucy Stoddard of New York. Northampton, Feb 6 – Prof Francis H. Stoddard was the son of Solomon and Frances Greenwood Stoddard. He was graduated from Amherst and received an MA degree from the college in 1886. He also held a PhD degree from the University of Pittsburg and an LLD from New York University. In recent years he had made his home with his daughter at 22 West 68th st in New York city. He was the author of numerous books and had edited a volume of verse. He was a member of the Authors and Century Clubs, New York. Funeral services will be held Saturday at the home of a nephew, Harry Stoddard Williston, of 35 Round Hill road, Northampton. He was for 26 years Professor of the English Language and Literature, and for 4 years Dean of the College of Arts and Pure Science in New York University New York City. His Wife/Lucy M. Smith/Born Oct. 26 1848/Died July 22 1924 Lucy M. Smith Stoddard, was the Daughter of Hinsdale and Lucy Root Smith of Springfield, Mass.
