Vreeland Design Associates Re: Lindsay Koshgarian, 660 Florence Rd, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of house roof to support proposed solar array. I have reviewed the roof truss design and the framing details on the house roof for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 24'x 34', 2-story, contemporary style house was constructed in 2008. 25 PV solar panels are to be installed on the driveway side, south facing roof of the house. The house roof is framed with 2x4 Fink design roof trusses, designed and manufactured by UFP Belchertown, LLC, installed at 24"on-center, spanning 24' with an 11/12 roof pitch. The trusses have been designed fora 35 psf roof snow load, a 10 psf dead load on the top chord, and a 100 mph wind load. The 100 mph wind speed Vasd is equivalent to a Vuir of approximately 128 mph and exceeds the current 117 mph Vuir minimum code required wind speed. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV solar panel unit weight of 40f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one roof truss, the roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
