The Southampton Historical Commission is actively involved in the regional collaborative to document the Hampshire/Hampden portion of the New Haven to Northampton Canal. PVPC, Southwick,
Westfield, Russell, Southampton, Easthampton and Northampton have been part of this effort for more than a year. A request for proposal for the hiring of a consultant has been prepared.
Said consultant will be tasked to prepare an Archaeological and Resource Survey, mapping and submission of inventory forms for the Massachusetts portion of the canal. The Connecticut
portion of the canal has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since the 1980’s. The above work is an essential step toward formal historic designation.
Southampton Historical Commission has submitted a request for funding to our CPC for our equal portion of the cost of this effort. That request is expected to be considered in an August
meeting.
We are hopeful that Northampton CPC will look favorably on this multi community project and approve its portion of the funding to allow this project to proceed.
