Vreeland Design Associates Re: Dan Felten, 15 Fourth Ave, Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roofs to support proposed solar arrays. I have investigated the roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installations. The original 2- story 20'x 24' main house with 4'x 20' ell was constructed around 1900. A 16'x 23', 2-story addition off the back of the house was constructed in 2010. 5 PV solar panels are to be installed on the main house front east facing roof, 3 solar panels on the south facing roof of the ell and 11 solar panels on the east facing roof the addition. The main house and ell roofs are framed with full dimension 2x4 rafters installed at 20" on-center, spanning 9'-6" with both roofs having a 9/12 roof slope. The valley rafters between the main house and ell are full dimension 3x6. 2x6 joists are attached to the bottom of the full-length rafters and prevent the roofs from spreading. The addition roof is framed with 2x10 rafters installed 24"on-center, spanning 8' with a 9/12 slope. 2x8 joists are attached to the bottom of the rafters preventing the roof from spreading. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. The full-length 2x4 rafters of the main house and ell that will support the solar panels, see the image below, have too long of a span and need to be reinforced by installing a 2x4 kneewall located 2'-0" in from the exterior walls to reduce the span of the rafters. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 45± lbs, with the attachment points of the arrays on the main house and ell roofs placed at a maximum of 40" on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter and on the addition roof installed 4' on center and staggered, the reinforced rafters, as outlined above, the roof framing of both the main house and ell and addition roofs are adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City Northampton.
