Vreeland Design Associates Re: Grow Food Northampton, Inc, Meadow St, Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing timber frame open shed roof to support proposed solar array. On 3/31/21, I conducted a site visit to investigated the existing roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 1-story, 14'x 14' timber frame open gable roof structure appears to have been constructed in the past 4-6 years. 8 PV solar panels are to be installed on the south facing roof. The roof is framed with full dimension 2x6 rafters installed 24"on-center, spanning 6'-6", with a roof slope of 4/12. The rafters are supported on 2—2"x 9'/4" eave beams notched on the two sides of 6x6 posts installed 7' on-center. 2x6 rafter ties are installed 4' on-center and attached to the bottom of the rafters preventing the roof from spreading. The roofing is screw down corrugated metal. I have reviewed the mounting details for the PV solar array. CorruSlide mounting brackets will be secured to the metal roof corrugations for mounting the proposed arrays. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 41+ lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 36"on-center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the existing roof framing and timber frame are adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
