December 23, 2019 Northampton Building Department 212 Main Street Northampton, MA 01060 RE: 36 MUNROE STREET,NORTHAMPTON MA 01060 CERTIFICATION FOR AS-BUILT CEILING JOISTS Northampton Building Department: It was requested by Bob Walker, of Construct Associates, the contractor for the subject residences' garage renovation, that I provide a certification letter confirming that the as built ceiling joists in the garage are acceptable. Following a site visit to the residence on Monday, December 16,2019 by Tara Strassburg of SSB Engineering,we analyzed the existing condition and have developed the following repair plan: 1- Provide 2x4 SPF#2 collar ties @16" O.C., a minimum 2'-0" long,centered on the ridge. 2- Provide vertical 2x4 SPF #2 members at every 2x8 ceiling joist lap location. Provide (2) Timberlocks at the top and (2)Timberlocks at the bottom of each 2x4. 3- Provide (2) additional Timberlock screws to each 32" lap, so there will be 4 Timberlocks total per lap splice, at each 2x8 ceiling joist. 4- Provide 2x4 knee-walls on each side of the attic area, a minimum of 2'-6" away from the edge for rafter support. These should be nailed to each rafter and placed on a bottom plate bearing on the attic joists. Attached is a sketch outlining these repairs. This approval/recommendation is for the components of the structure outlined above,and no other members/components in the garage's structural system have been inspected or approved by SSB Engineering, LLC at this time.
