Operational conditions
Last update: January 2017
The present document is an annex to the technical rider and forms an integral part of the
guest performance contract.

I. Opening conditions for the installation
Day off A minimum of one day off after 6 consecutive operating days
Start time Premiere day: 5 pm, at the earliest
Subsequent days: to be agreed with the production team
Number of showings Maximum of three consecutive showings per day, at intervals
of 90 minutes (the installation will run without interruption)
Exceptional additional showings are possible but require the
prior agreement of the production team.
Duration of each showing A total of approx. 90-100 minutes. Given that the spectators
are free to choose their itinerary, the duration may vary.
Maximum audience capacity
per showing 50
Rate of audience entry First showing of the day: one person every 15 seconds (i.e. 50
spectators successfully admitted to the installation within 10
minutes).
All subsequent showings: the spectators may enter until there
are a total of 50 people (maximum permitted capacity) inside
the installation. Once this maximum is reached, a one-in, one-
out policy should apply. The idea here is to have 50 spectators
inside the installation at all times.
Given that the time spectators spend inside the installation
may vary, certain spectators may be able to enter already
shortly before or may be allowed to enter only shortly after the
time indicated on their ticket. This will depend on when those
attending the earlier showing leave.

II. Visiting conditions for the installation
Ticket prices The ticket prices must be discussed with the production team
beforehand. The prices shall reflect the fact that, although
there are no actors, the installation is a dramatic composition
and offers the audience a spatiotemporal experience. When it
was shown in Vidy, the “S” rate was chosen, i.e. the rate which
Vidy applies to shows which have few performers or have a
special format.
1. Queuing and entry to the installation
Time The time of the showing is indicated on the ticket, and
spectators wait in line at the entrance to the installation (or in
the waiting area designated by the host venue; which should be
in close proximity to the installation).
Cloakroom In the interests of security, spectators must leave coats, jackets
and bags in the cloakroom before entering the installation.
Mobile telephones For technical reasons, mobile phones must be either left in the
cloakroom or switched off/set to airplane mode.
Video screening The waiting area should be able to accommodate a 40-inch
monitor on which a video will be screened (monitor to be
provided by the venue as per the technical rider).
2. Inside the installation
Installation The installation is a built, closed space measuring 13 metres by
9, and comprising eight rooms leading off from a central
ellipsis-shaped atrium.
4
Central space (atrium) Upon entering the installation, the spectators arrive in the
atrium. A video will be screened here (on the ceiling) and a few
chairs will be provided.
Eight automatic doors lead off from the atrium, each into a
room containing the “Nachlass” (“legacy”) of the person whose
name appears beside the door. Spectators enter each room
from the atrium, and return there at the end of their visit to the
given room.
There is a countdown timer above each door:
- when the door is shut, the time remaining until the door
opens automatically is displayed in red;
- when the door is open, the time remaining until the door
closes automatically is displayed in white.
The door on the left will
automatically close in 18
seconds, while the door
on the right will
automatically open in 4
minutes and 55 seconds.
5
The rooms Each room is a staged space in which an audio or video
recording of the given person is played. Photos of each of the
rooms are provided in Section III below.
As soon as the automatic door closes, the recording begins to
play. Each recording is between 8 and 10 minutes long. At the
end of the recording, the door opens automatically.
The recordings are played on a loop, with a break of approx. 45
seconds between two showings in order to leave spectators
sufficient time to enter and leave the room.
Entry Entry to the rooms is only permitted during the break between
the automatical opening and closing of the doors.
Given that the duration of the recordings varies from room to
room, the eight doors do not open simultaneously.
Exit In principle, spectators may only exit a room during the break
between the automatical opening and closing of the door.
However, an exit button inside the room may be activated in an
emergency.
Itinerary The spectators are free to choose the order in which they visit
the eight rooms and the time they spend in the atrium before
entering the next room. This also means that they are free to
decide whether or not to visit all eight rooms.
Exiting the installation The spectators leave the installation either where they entered
or through an exit on the opposite side of the atrium,
depending on what has been arranged with the production
team beforehand.
Reduced mobility Access to the installation by wheelchair users and individuals
with reduced mobility should be discussed beforehand with the
Vidy stage manager. (Width of the doors: 90 cm)

3. Reception staff
Number In principle, the venue should have three reception staff in
place. However, this number may vary depending on the
configuration of the venue and should be discussed with the
production team.
Posts Two reception staff will be positioned directly outside the
installation (to manage the queue), while the other remaining
member will be positioned inside.
Working times Reception staff outside the installation: they remain in position
until the last spectator attending the last showing enters the
installation.
Reception staff inside the installation: he/she remains in
position until the last spectator attending the last showing
leaves the installation.
Duties Reception staff outside the installation:
- Meet and greet spectators
- Manage entry to the installation (as per Section I above);
this includes keeping a constant tally of the number of
spectators entering and exiting the installation.
- Provide the spectators with the following information:
o explain that, in the interests of security, they must leave
their coats, jackets and bags in the cloakroom;
o explain that, for technical reasons, mobile telephones
must be either left in the cloakroom or switched off/set
to airplane mode;
o explain that there are eight rooms and that the doors
open and close automatically;
o explain that they are free to choose the order in which
they visit the rooms;
o point out where the exit is (either the same as the
entrance or on the opposite side of the atrium,
depending on what has been arranged with the
production team beforehand);
o point out that a member of staff is on hand at all times in
the installation should they have any problems.
- Will keep available a book Nachlass, pieces sans personnes
for the spectators, and if the book is not for sell in the library
of the theatre, to organize the selling of the books at the
welcoming desk or other interesting point.
7
Reception staff inside the installation: maintain a discreet
presence so that spectators can freely explore the installation
at their own pace:
- if necessary, explain to the public how the system works
(entering and leaving the rooms, exiting the installation
etc.);
- ensure that the installation is neat and tidy;
- regularly check the rooms to ensure that the props are in
place and in working order, make any necessary adjustments
or inform the Vidy technicians (as per Section III below);
- in the interests of the optimal functioning of the installation,
ensure that at least five spectators are admitted to the
Richard Frackowiak room, whenever possible (see Section III
below);
Vidy staff The Vidy technicians shall ensure the smooth technical-related
running of the installation and shall act as the point of contact
for reception staff at the host venue.
