I have investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the proposed PV solar panel installations. The 1-story detached, 28'x42' carriage garage/studio was constructed/renovated around 1990. The hip style roof is framed with 2x6 rafters, installed at 191/2"�E on-center, spanning 13', with a roof pitch of 7/12. 2x8 ceiling joists are installed at 39"+-on-center and are attached to the rafters preventing the roof from spreading. The hip rafters are 2x 12. 18 solar panels are proposed on the long southwest facing roof and 6 solar panels on the southeast facing hip roof. The rafters longer than 11'-3"along the slope and the hip rafters supporting the solar panels need to be reinforced. Reinforce the rafters by sistering 2x8x10' centered along the length of the existing rafters. Attach the new 2x8 with 2— IOd common nails (3-IOd nailgun nails)at 12"on- center, or 2—TimberLok screws at 24"on-center. Reinforce the hip rafter by installing a 3 —2x4 post approximately 5'-6" from the ridge. The center 2x4 is directly under the hip rafter and the outer 2x4s extend up along the sides of the hip rafter. The post is supported on the existing 2x8 joist, reinforced with 2—new 2x8s sistered to the side of the existing joist,which is located directly above a bearing wall below. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV panel unit weight of 38f lbs,with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 40"on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the reinforced roof framing, as outlined above, is adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
