(413) 589-0672 02 Nov 2016 Fire Prevention Bureau Northampton Fire Department 26 Carlon Drive Northampton, Ma Subject: New Sprinkler System Install Corner House 5 Pomeroy Terrace Northampton, Ma This letter will serve as confirmation that we have taken into consideration Massachusetts State Building Code with regard to the design of the automatic fire protection system and compliance with applicable codes at the above referenced location. BASIS (METHODOLOGY) OF DESIGN SECTION 1 – Building Description a) Building “Use” Group: Residential b) Total square footage: 9,100 ft² c) Number of floors above grade: 3 d) Number of floors below grade: 1 e) Type of construction: Combustible f) Type of hazards: Ordinary Group I & Residential g) Hazardous material usage and storage: N/A h) High storage of commodities: N/A SECTION 2 – APPLICABLE STANDARDS a) 2009 IBC & 8th Edition Massachusetts State Building Code Amendments b) NFPA – 13: Sprinkler Systems, 2013 Edition c) NFPA - 13R: Low-Rise Residential Occupancies, 2013 Edition SECTION 3 – DESIGN RESPONSIBILITY Sprinkler system design drawings and calculations shall be reviewed and stamped by a registered Professional Engineer, registered in State of Massachusetts in discipline of Fire Protection systems design, employed or contracted to review the design of the system for this building. The installing sprinkler system contractor shall contract such design work, as part of their overall work scope. The reviewing engineer shall be the engineer of record. Corner House– 5 Pomeroy Terrace Northampton, Ma 02 Nov 2016 SECTION 4 – FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS TO BE INSTALLED This project involves the installation of a new wet pipe automatic sprinkler system. The system in the basement will be black steel pipe. Floors 1 through 3 will use CPVC pipe. SECTION 5 – FEATURES USED IN THE DESIGN METHODOLOGY Area 1 (Unit 5) is hydraulically calculated to accommodate a residential design density of 0.05 gpm over four heads in the most hydraulically demanding compartment with a 100 gpm hose stream allowance. Area 2 (Basement) is hydraulically calculated to accommodate an ordinary hazard group I design density of 0.15 gpm over 989ft² in the most hydraulically demanding location with a 250 gpm hose stream allowance. Remote area is reduced for quick response heads per NFPA 13 section 11.2.3.2.3. Area 3 (Unit 4) is hydraulically calculated to accommodate a residential design density of 0.05 gpm over four heads in the most hydraulically demanding compartment with a 100 gpm hose stream allowance. SECTION 6 – SPECIAL CONSIDERATION AND DESCRIPTION No deviations are intended SEQUENCE OF OPERATION SECTION 1 In the event of a fire, one or more sprinklers will operate. The installed network of piping will supply water to the operating sprinklers. When a sprinkler operates (fuses), the flow of water will activate the flow switch and the existing electric bell will sound. The flow switch will send an electric signal to the alarm panel, simultaneously sending an alarm (installed by others) to the fire department and will sound an audible alarm within the building alerting the occupants. The building is not equipped with a standpipe system. To increase sprinkler system pressure, the fire department will be able to connect hoses from a pumper truck to the existing fire department connection. TESTING CRITERIA SECTION 1 - Testing Criteria The sprinkler system shall be tested in accordance with NFPA pamphlet 13. SECTION 2 - Equipment and Tool Sprinkler system installing contractor shall supply all necessary tools and equipment required to conduct the required testing of the systems. SECTION 3 - Approval Requirements Upon the completion of the installation of the automatic fire sprinkler system, the installing contractor shall perform all tests required by NFPA-13.
