086200Roofing Replacement May 14, 2015 South Street Apartments 086200 UNIT SKYLIGHTS Page 1 of 6 SECTION 086200 -UNIT SKYLIGHTS PART 1 -GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A.Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A.Section Includes: 1.Self-flashing unit skylights with integral curb. B.Related Sections: 1.Division 06 Section " Miscellaneous Rough Carpentry" for wood framing and blocking at unit skylights. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A.Product Data: For each type of unit skylight indicated. Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes for unit skylights. B.Shop Drawings: For unit skylight work. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and connections to supporting structure and other adjoining work. C.Product Test Reports: Based on evaluation of comprehensive tests performed by a qualified testing agency for each type and size of unit skylight. D.Field quality-control reports. E.Maintenance Data: For unit skylights to include in maintenance manuals. F.Warranty: Sample of special warranty. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE A.Manufacturer Qualifications: A manufacturer capable of fabricating unit skylights that meet or exceed performance requirements indicated and of documenting this performance by inclusion in lists and by labels, test reports, and calculations. C.Source Limitations: Obtain unit skylights from single source from single manufacturer. D.Surface-Burning Characteristics of Plastic Glazing: Provide plastic glazing sheets identical to those tested for fire-exposure behavior per test method indicated below by a testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Identify materials with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting agency. 1.Self-Ignition Temperature: 650 deg F (343 deg C)or more for plastic sheets in thickness indicated when tested per ASTM D 1929. 2.Smoke-Production Characteristics: Comply with either requirement below: a.Smoke-Developed Index: 450 or less when tested per ASTM E 84 on plastic sheets in manner indicated for use. b.Smoke Density: 75 or less when tested per ASTM D 2843 on plastic sheets in thickness indicated for use. 3.Burning Characteristics: Tested per ASTM D 635. a.Acrylic Glazing: Class CC2, burning rate of 2-1/2 inches (64 mm)per minute or less for nominal thickness of 0.060 inch (1.5 mm)or thickness indicated for use. b.Polycarbonate Glazing: Class CC1, burning extent of 1 inch (25 mm)or less for nominal thickness of 0.060 inch (1.5 mm)or thickness indicated for use. c.Polycarbonate-Insulating-Panel Glazing: Class CC2, burning rate of 2-1/2 inches (64 mm)per minute or less for nominal thickness of 0.060 inch (1.5 mm)or thickness indicated for use. E.Unit Skylight Standard: Comply with AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS, "North American Fenestration Standard Voluntary Performance Specification for Windows, Skylights and Glass Doors," for minimum standards of performance, materials, components, accessories, and fabrication. Comply with more stringent requirements if indicated. F.Structural Loads: Comply with requirements of AAMA publication, “Voluntary Uniform Structural Load Standard for Plastic Domed Skylights” (AAMA 1606-82) requiring acrylic sheets of adequate thickness to withstand positive or negative test pressure of 60 PSF. 1.5 COORDINATION A.Coordinate unit skylight flashing requirements with roofing system. B.Provide anchors and inserts to be placed in adjacent construction in proper sequence so as not to delay the Work. Roofing Replacement May 14, 2015 South Street Apartments 086200 UNIT SKYLIGHTS Page 3 of 6 1.6 WARRANTY A.Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of unit skylights that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period. 1.Failures include, but are not limited to, the following: a.Uncontrolled water leakage. b.Deterioration of metals, metal finishes, and other materials beyond normal weathering. c.Breakage of polycarbonate glazing. d.Deterioration of insulating-glass hermetic seal. 2.Warranty Period: Five years from date of Substantial Completion. PART 2 -PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A.Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Wasco Products, Inc.;DDAP3 Model 2828 or comparable product by one of the following: 1.American Skylites. 2.Bristolite Skylights. 3.Naturalite Skylight Systems; Vistawall Group (The). 2.2 MATERIALS A.Aluminum Components: 1.Sheets: ASTM B 209 (ASTM B 209M), alloy and temper to suit forming operations and finish requirements but with not less than the strength and durability of alclad Alloy 3005-H25. 2.Extruded Shapes: ASTM B 221 (ASTM B 221M), alloy and temper to suit structural and finish requirements but with not less than the strength and durability of Alloy 6063-T52. B.Fasteners: Same metal as metal being fastened, nonmagnetic stainless steel, or other noncorrosive metal as recommended by manufacturer. Finish exposed fasteners to match material being fastened. 1.Where removal of exterior exposed fasteners might allow access to building, provide nonremovable fastener heads. Roofing Replacement May 14, 2015 South Street Apartments 086200 UNIT SKYLIGHTS Page 4 of 6 2.3 GLAZING A.Polycarbonate Glazing: Thermoformable, extruded monolithic sheets, UV resistant, burglar-resistance rated per UL 972, and with average impact strength of 12 to 16 ft- lb/in.(640 to 854 J/m)of width when tested per ASTM D 256, Test Method A (Izod). 1.Double-Glazing Profile: Dome, 25 percent rise. a.Thicknesses: Not less than thicknesses required to exceed performance requirements. b.Inner Glazing Color: Transparent. c.Outer Glazing Color: Transparent. B.Glazing Gaskets: Manufacturer's standard. 2.4 INSTALLATION MATERIALS A.Joint Sealants: As specified in Division 07 Section "Joint Sealants." B.Mastic Sealant: Polyisobutylene; nonhardening, nonskinning, nondrying, nonmigrating sealant. 2.5 UNIT SKYLIGHTS A.General: Provide factory-assembled unit skylights that include glazing, extruded- aluminum glazing retainers, gaskets, and inner frames and that are capable of withstanding performance requirements indicated. B.Integral Curb: Extruded-aluminum, self-flashing type. 1.Height: 9 inches (225 mm). 2.Construction: Double wall. 3.Insulation: Manufacturer's standard rigid or semirigid type. C.Unit Shape and Size: Square, 25-by-25-inch (1016-by-1016-mm)outside curb. D.Condensation Control: Fabricate unit skylights with integral internal gutters and nonclogging weeps to collect and drain condensation to the exterior. E.Thermal Break: Fabricate unit skylights with thermal barrier separating exterior and interior metal framing. 2.6 GENERAL FINISH REQUIREMENTS A.Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for recommendations for applying and designating finishes. Variations in appearance of adjoining components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved Samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast. 2.7 ALUMINUM FINISHES A.Mill Finish: Manufacturer's standard. PART 3 -EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A.Examine openings, substrates, structural support, anchorage, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of the Work. B.Proceed with unit skylight installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 INSTALLATION A.Coordinate installation of unit skylight with installation of substrates, vapor retarders, roof insulation, roofing membrane, and flashing as required to ensure that each element of the Work performs properly and that combined elements are waterproof and weathertight. B.Comply with recommendations in AAMA 1607 and with manufacturer's written instructions for installing unit skylights. C.Install unit skylights level, plumb, and true to line, without distortion. D.Anchor unit skylights securely to supporting substrates. E.Where metal surfaces of unit skylights will contact incompatible metal or corrosive substrates, including preservative-treated wood, apply bituminous coating on concealed metal surfaces, or provide other permanent separation recommended in writing by unit skylight manufacturer. F.Set unit skylight flanges in thick bed of roofing cement to form a seal unless otherwise indicated. G.Where cap flashing is indicated, install to produce waterproof overlap with roofing or roof flashing. Seal with thick bead of mastic sealant except where overlap is indicated to be left open for ventilation. Roofing Replacement May 14, 2015 South Street Apartments 086200 UNIT SKYLIGHTS Page 6 of 6 3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A.After completion of installation and nominal curing of sealant and glazing compounds but before installation of interior finishes, test for water leaks according to AAMA 501.2. B.Perform test for total area of each unit skylight. C.Work will be considered defective if it does not pass tests and inspections. D.Additional testing and inspections, at Contractor's expense, will be performed to determine compliance of replaced or additional work with specified requirements. 3.4 CLEANING A.Clean exposed unit skylight surfaces according to manufacturer's written instructions. Touch up damaged metal coatings and finishes. B.Remove excess sealants, glazing materials, dirt, and other substances. C.Remove and replace glazing that has been broken, chipped, cracked, abraded, or damaged during construction period. D.Protect unit skylight surfaces from contact with contaminating substances resulting from construction operations. END OF SECTION 086200
