1. Introduction
Hazardous material sampling and analysis was conducted at the Leeds School in
Northampton, MA to support designer services for a roof replacement. The objective was
to inspect constructs, finishes and materials that may be affected by the project and may
contain asbestos. All materials, which were to be disturbed by future renovation, were
inspected.
2. Sampling
Kenneth Menzies, PEER Consultants (MA Inspector License AI052108) surveyed the
suspect asbestos containing building materials (ACBM) on October 17, 2014. Locations
were selected with the guidance of Raymond Design Associates, Inc. (RDA) design
engineers to facilitate the sampling of suspect building materials that will be disturbed by
the future roof replacement. Therefore, all suspect hazardous building materials in the
building were not necessarily sampled. Multiple samples of suspect materials were
collected to meet the requirements of EPA and OSHA regulations.
Suspect ACBM, which were identified, included roofing materials and roof penetration
sealants. Samples were labeled, and appropriate chain-of-custody documentation was
completed. The ACBM bulk samples were sent to AMA Analytical Services Inc. for
laboratory analysis.
3. Analysis
Bulk asbestos samples were analyzed using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) coupled
with dispersion staining in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency's
(EPA) "Method for the Determination of Asbestos in Bulk Building Materials"
(EPA/600/R-93/116, July 1993). AMA is accredited under the National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST), National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation
Program (NVLAP), American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), and the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts (DOS).
4. Findings
Visual inspection of selected materials indicated the presence of suspect asbestos
containing building materials (ACBM) including roofing materials and roof sealants.
The ACBM analytical data is provided in Appendix A. Samples are identified on a
sample log (Appendix A). A summary of the ACBM results is provided in Table 1. An
ACBM contains more than 1% asbestos and is regulated by the EPA and OSHA.
