ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
This is a two story Federal style house with side gable roof. It is five bays wide and one bay deep. This house is now vinyl sided
and it has a asphalt roof. At the center of the front façade is a front entry with a broken pediment, which is a post 1980 alteration
to the house that replaced a narrow trabeated door with projecting cornice. Windows on the home are one over one replacement
sash. Along the ridge at the center of the roof are two small brick chimneys.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
From Form B of 1980: “This simple five-bay Colonial type house may have been built early in the 19th century. During the
second half of the century, the property was in the hands of the Strong family, and it may have been owned by them even
earlier. Sgt. Jonathan Strong was the first member of this old Northampton family to settle on South Street, doing so in 1730,
and there has been some member of the family on the street until well into the 20th century.”
