ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
This is a two story Italianate style home with bracketed side gable roof. It is three bays wide and two bays deep. At the center of
the three bay front façade is a two story gabled entrance pavilion with arched blind window on the second story. A low pitched
hip roof porch extends across the full width of the front façade. The porch has chamfered posts with elaborately carved brack ets,
square balusters, a solid frieze, and lattice apron. The double leaf door with arched leaded glass glazing is a classic example of
an Italianate era entrance. Windows on the house have two over two sashes, architrave surrounds, and footed lintels. The
southern elevation of the house has a two story bay and the northern elevation has a one story bay. There are several additions
to the rear of the home, which collectively comprise over two thirds of the total square footage. The first is long two story rear ell.
Attached perpendicularly to the ell is a two-and-a-half story addition with slate roof. There are paired brick chimneys along the
ridge of the main block of the house and a brick chimney on the ell. The property also includes a multi bayed barn that is two
stories in height.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
From Form B of 1976 and 1980: “This house was built during the 1860’s for Lemuel C. Ferry.”
