ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
This is a two story Federal style home with side gable roof. It is five bays wide and two bays deep. Some of the house’s original
stylistic features were lost when aluminum siding was place on the home. At the center of the five bay front façade is the front
entrance which has a trabeated surround that encloses three-quarter length sidelights and is topped by a pediment.
Characteristic of turn of the eighteenth century homes, windows sit close to the eaves. The house has six over six sash windows
that are somewhat hidden behind metal storm windows. The house has a small brick chimney along the ridge line that is slightly
off center, which probably replaced a much larger chimney at one time. The large exterior chimney at the center of the southern
elevation was probably placed on the home after 1900.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE

From Form B of 1976: “This is one of several 18th century houses built on South Street. The street was first permanently settled
in the late 17th century and remains today primarily a residential street. Captain Roger Clapp was the first member of the Clapp
family to establish a homestead on South Street, doing so on the northern side of the street in 1713. There has been a member
of this family on the street ever since.
The house was probably built for Azariah Clapp, third son of Asahel Clapp and grandson of Captain Roger Clapp.
Azariah was born during the 1750’s and probably established his homestead at the time of his marriage to Esther Tileston (c.
1780). At his death in 1819, the property was left to his son, also named Azariah. The property remained in the Clapp famil y
until about 1900 when the second Azariah’s widow, Elizabeth D. Clapp, passed away.”
