ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
This two-and-a-half story home is an excellent example of the Queen Anne style. The home is irregularly massed home and
incorporates numerous gables, a polygonal tower with polygonal roof and turreted second story porch above front entry porch.
The large front gable has three-part oriel with pedimented gable that has a decorative tympanum. The gabled front entry porch
features a sunburst design in the gable field. The porch has an elaborate spindle frieze, turned posts, and balustrade of square
balusters. The second story turreted porch displays matching porch features. Stained glass sidelights ornament the front
entrance as does flanking picture windows. The house has new windows that are one over one sash. The southern elevation
also has a two story bay topped by a gable roof. The house is further ornamented by scalloped wood shingle siding. The house
has two brick chimneys the second of which is a through-cornice chimney on the southern elevation of the home. Additional
features of this home were difficult to discern due to the extensive foliage.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
From Form B of 1975: “C.H. Jones, local architect. 1875, Gazette notes that ‘C.H. Jones of this town, the well-known painter, is
acquiring quite the reputation as an architect.’ A schoolhouse and hotel were at that time attributed to him; by 1887, the year of
the design of the Strong (Locke) House, Jones had planned 57 houses, 3 churches, and other buildings. ‘His first house was the
house of William A. Dickinson, Hatfield.’ Other residences in Northampton designed by Jones include the Crooks House (28
Pomeroy Terrace).
Mrs. George (Martha) Strong sold the residence to Mary A. Locke in 1895 and the Locke name appears along with the
house on the 1895 Atlas of Northampton. It is probably for this reason that the house is locally known as the Locke House.”
