ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
This house represents the late Queen Anne style as it was constructed for the middle and working class in Northampton. It is
two-and-a-half stories under a hipped roof that is slate-covered. There is a cross-gable on the east façade and a cross-gable on
the north. A three-sided bay window is on the south elevation and all three gables and bays add some complexity to the plan of
the house. A wraparound porch on turned posts fills the angle between the front cross-gable and that on the north.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
From Form B of 1980: “This large, two-and-a-half story residence is prominently located at the junction of three important mid-
nineteenth century roads: the road leading to the Baystate Mills (Riverside Drive), the road to Warner’s Silk Mill (Federal Street
heading north), and the road to the Paper Mill (Federal Street heading south). For some unknown reason, this lot wasn’t
developed until early twentieth century.”
