ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
This is a two-and-a-half story house with a front-gable roof and a two-and-a-half story wing on the east for an L-shaped plan.
The main block of the house is three bays wide and has a side-hall entry under a pedimented portico that rests on turned posts.
Windows are all vinyl replacements with 6/1 and 4/1 configuration. On the south façade of the wing is a two-story bay angled
bay window, the first story of which is larger than the second story. The house has vinyl shingles laid in the gable fields,
suggesting that shingles originally were in that position. The house is a modest Queen Anne in style. It has one of the few
remaining carriage houses, however, now converted to a house.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
From Form B of 1980: “In 1872, Levi Campbell, from Plainfield, Massachusetts, bought lot no. 4 of Charles Warren’s subdivision
plan for the north side of North Main Street for $400. Levi was one of three Campbell brothers from Plainfield who bought lots
adjacent to each other here on North Main Street. His house first appears on the 1884 atlas.”
