ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
This is a two-and-a-half story home late Queen Anne style home with a side gabled roof and paired front gables. The front
façade is divided into three sections. The two outer sections consist of large two-story paneled bays that are capped by
pedimented gables. The middle section consists of the front entry and is marked by a pediment at the center of the shed roof
porch. The one-story shed roof porch is supported by turned posts and has a spindle frieze and balustrade comprised of turned
posts. Beneath the porch is a decorative apron. Paired brick chimneys are located on the southern slope of the roof. Windows
on the house are one over one sash and are framed by simple flat stock surrounds. This house is clapboard sided and has an
asphalt roof. Behind the home is a one-bay garage with a flat roof and double leaf doors.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
From Form B of 1980: “This large double house was built around 1895. The 1895-96 local directory lists Timothy and James
McGrath as both residing here. The McGrath brothers repaired carriages and operated a blacksmith shop in the center of
Northampton at 19 Armory Street.”
