ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Manning House is a well-built Colonial Revival house, one of several brick Colonial Revival houses in the area. It is two-
and-a-half stories in height under a side-gable roof on which is centered an eyebrow window – an uncommon feature for the
very conservative Colonial Revival houses of the 1920s in Northampton. The house has two end wall chimneys and one-story
porch wings at each side elevation, maintaining symmetry. It is three bays wide and three bays deep and it has a pedimented
portico on the north façade that rests on Doric columns. Its entry is beneath an elliptical fanlight with sidelights at each side.
First floor windows place this house firmly in the 20th century with triple composition openings: 4/1-8/1-4/1 in configuration. At
the second floor windows have 6/1 sash.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
From Form B of 1977: “Elaine W. Manning inherited the house from her father Michael Manning, who built it in 1927. She sold it
to David Schuman in August, 1975.”
