THE
J GILMAN BROTHERS COMPANYMAY 8 935
GILMAN Manufacturers of Commercial Quality Foam Boards
Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding Gilman Ceiling Panels. Wr arc pleased to enclose the product
literature and samples you requested.
What Is the secret to the Gilman Ceiling Panel technology and performance? Our panels are designed to
he installed completely below either an upright or pendant sprinkler system, therefore the sprinkler heads
above the panels are completely hidden out of sight. The low melt temperature parcels arc designed to
quickly shrink and drop out of the grids exposing the heads and allowing the sprinkler system to activate
with a 'prompt and unobstructed sprinkler waren flow'_**
What makes these panels extremely desirable and popular for both nen and existing sprinkler and
ceiling systems? Since the panels can be installed below the sprinkler system, rime, labor and material costs
are reduced significantly by not basing to lowcr the sprinkler heads. In addition, .savings due to reduced
heating and cooling coat are also realized because of the insulation value of these noels.
Since fire safety and the performance of Gilman Ceiling Panels are of primnn' importance, extensive testing
has been performed to meet some of the roughest standards;
e National Fire Protection Association Standard 131791.
• Classified by Underwriters Laboratory, Inc
• Factory Mutual System Approved Standard 4651.
* Meets ASTM C578-92 for thn mai insulation.
" Non-dusting to meet USDA standards.
Weighing less than one pound per panel. the light weight easy to install Gilman Ceiling Panels art
manufactured with a bright white pebbled finish on both sides. Having two usable finished sides allow the
panels to be reversed for rnyry additional years of service.
Being made of 100% thermoplastic resin, the Gilman Ceiling Panels arc inherently moisture proof which
makes thein washable and resistant to warp. sag and mildew. Additionally, the Gilman Ceiling Panel is the
answer for the environmentally responsible companies who require a recyclable material. Installations that
spec!fy our ce"hug panel msy be recycled ;MO other useful products lhwugh available polystyrene recycling
facilities throughout North America.

CELLULITE SUSPENDED CEILING PANELS
from
THE GILMAN BROTHERS COMPANY
GILMAN, CONNECTICUT 06336
1 1 INTRODUCTION
1. 1 The Gilman Brothers Company submitted their Cellulite suspended ceiling
IPanels. a foamed polystyrene product. for Factory Mutual Research Approval .
7.. 2 This report contains the results or fire tests previously Conducted
under report Serial No. 19052 .
1.3 Fire tests were conducted on the product to determine Its effect an the
operation of automatic sprinklers installed above and its possible risme spread
behavior when installed in a suspended roiling grid system.
1. 4 The suspended ceiling panels produced no Flame spread over its surface
and will not significantly interfere with expected sprinkler operation.
1.5 Cellulite polystyrene ceiling panels met Factory Mutual Research
Approval requirements subject to the limitations noted in Section V.
1.6 This report supersedes Report Serial No. 19052.
7 II MATERIAL TESTED
2. 1 The Cellulite suspended ceiling panel is a rigid board molded from
expanded polystyrene beads, The product had an average density of 1.0 lb/ft'
(16.0 kg/mil and is provided in nominal 2 x 4 ft (0.6 x 1.3 NO x 1 tn. (25 mm)
thick square edge panels.
1 III FIRE TESTS
3, 1 Seven tests were performed to observe the ease of drop-out or melt-out,
the cooling effect due to water application simulating sprinkler distribution
and the surface combustibility of the product.
13.2 For tests 1 and 2, three panels were mounted horizontally in a metal
suspension system positioned 35 in. (89 mm) above and centered over en exposure
fire derived from a I in. (25 mm) depth of alcohol within a 1 Pt' (0.09 m') pan.
The panels were exposed to intermittent flame impingement.

J . 3 tests 3-6 inclusive were simile' to tests 1 and 2 except thet water was
sprayed applied at a rate of 10 gpm (37.8 dm' /min) onto the panels before and
during the fire exposure.
3. 4 Test 7 was conducted on an (8 x 10 ft (2.4 x 3 m) telling grid assembly
with the fire exposure located under the center ceiling panel . A fen was
positioned to induce a low velocity draft on the underside of the ceiling.
IV TEST RESULTS
4. i Tests i_ and 2 were conducted to determine the effect of heat and- flame
on the panels and their ability to melt nut quickly. Performance was noted at
various time intervals during exposure to the fire source.
2b sec. - slight sagging of panel
40 sec. - flame burned through
90 sec. - sides of panel separated in center along short axis
4. 1. 1 Burn-through, in 40 seconds, indicated heat will reach sprinkler
quickly and the ceiling tile will not interfere with prompt sprinkler operation.
4 2 test 3-6 were conducted to determine if water would Cool the panels and
delay Fall-out. As the water flowed onto the panels, some was absorbed and some
ran off prior to ignition of the exposure. Panels remained flat during
application of the water prior to fire exposure. Performance was noted at
various time intervals during exposure to the fire source.
25 sec . • slight sagging of panel . Water accumulating.
65 sec . - sagging and water accumulating increased to where the weight
of water and thinning of the panel through melting, caused
the panel to fall out .
4 3 Test 7 was performed to simulate Favorable conditions towards creating
a surface spreading fire an the underside of the ceiling.
4.3. 1 The exposure was arranged SO that flames impinged on the panel
nearest the fan. No flaming over the surface of the panels was noted.
4. 4 Since the oerfnrmance was satisfactory for the conditions employing
1 in. (25 mm) thick panels. it would also be deemed satisfactory with thinner
panels and/or a more severe exposure.
V FIELD INSTALLATION
5. 1 S rinklered Areas
5. 1 .1 For use below Automatic sprinklers, the individual panels must
be installed in a metal suspension system and have minimum nominal dimension of
2 x 2 ft (0.6 x 0.6 m) .
1
1 5. 1.2 Clips used to prevent normal drafts from lifting the panels
should limit the upward motion only and permit the panels to drop from the
suspension system without restraint.
1 5.2 Unsprinklered Areas
5.2.1 In noncombustible buildings having occupancies that do not
1 require sprinkler protection, this product may be installed as layin. ceiling
panels within a metal Suspension grid system without creating a need for
sprinklers.
1 VI MARKING
6.1 The manufacturer shall apply the FMRC name or Approval Mark on all
1
packaging of the Approved ceiling panels.
