house roof to support proposed solar array.
I have investigated the roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 22'x 26',2-
story contemporary style house was constructed in 2008. The rafters of the are 2x 12 installed at
16"on-center, spanning 10'-6",with a roof pitch of 11/12. The second floor ceiling joists which
appear to be 2x8 are attached near the bottom of the rafters and prevent the roof from spreading.
18 PV solar panels are to be installed on the southwest facing roof The roofing is asphalt shingles.
1 have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on my calculations and a PV
solar panel unit weight of 42± lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of
4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing is
adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the
current MA State Building Code.
