181 Burning Complaint 1991 BOARD OF HEALTH CITY OF NORTHAMPTON MN T.JOYCE Chairman MASSACHUSETTS 01060 CRUEL IL PARSONS TES I.McE1LLAIN.Health Agent September 12, 1991 Ms. Theresa Collins 181 Chestnut Street Northampton, MA 01060 Dear Ms. Collins: OFFICE OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH 210 MAIN STREET 01060 N13)5986950 Ext.213 The Northampton Board of Health has received complaints about excessive smoke being emitted from your back yard fireplace at 181 Chestnut Street. That smoke allegedly results from the burning of trash. The Northampton Board of Health has adopted a regulation governing smoke emission. (A copy of that regulation is enclosed.) Smoke with a density in excess of 30% opacity violates this regulation. In addition, the burning of trash in any stove, furnace, or fireplace violates state and federal Air Pollution Laws. The enclosed guidelines suggest burning practices which, if followed, will enable you to comply with the regulation. Please note that the burning of trash in any facility other than a licensed incinerator emits hazardous gases and odors which can pollute the air and endanger your health and that of your neighbors. If you have any questions concerning this notice, please do not hesitate to contact the Board of Health office. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with our efforts to reduce smoke pollution in Northampton. Very truly yours, / ' P-ter J. McErlain Health Agent PJMCE/cdh Enc.
